Theological and Religious Studies Tripos

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 389)

With effect from 1 October 2006

The form and date of submission of the dissertation for Part IIB have been amended; the titles and content of certain papers have been revised; and the choice of papers available to candidates for Part II has been extended as set out below.

Regulation 16(c).

By amending in line 1 the words in parentheses so as to read '(inclusive of notes but exclusive of bibliography)' and by replacing in lines 2 and 3 the words 'the third Friday of the Full Easter Term' by the words 'the third Monday of the Full Easter Term'.

Regulation 18.

Group A

The title of Paper A5 has been amended from 'The shaping of modern theology' to 'Who is Jesus Christ?'

Group B

The title of Paper B5 has been amended from 'Matthew's Gospel' to 'Jesus in Gospel tradition'.

Paper B13 (Theology and science) has been withdrawn and replaced by Paper C12 (see below).

Group C

The title of Paper C6 has been amended from 'Late patristic and medieval theology' to 'Disputed questions in the Christian tradition'. A new Paper C12 entitled 'Theology and science' has been introduced.

Regulations 26 and 27.

By amending the regulations so as to read:

26. A student who is a candidate for Part IIB in the year next after obtaining honours in Part IIA under Regulations 23 or 24 shall offer:

either(a)two papers chosen from Group C; and both Papers D1 and D2
or(b)three papers chosen from Group C; and one paper chosen from Group D

provided that

(i)a candidate who offered paper A1 in Part IIA may offer Paper B1 in the same language instead of Paper C1 as one of the papers chosen from Group C;
(ii)a candidate may offer as an additional paper, either a language from Papers A1 or B1 which he or she has not previously offered, or a second language from Paper C1, if he or she is offering that paper, or one further paper chosen from Group C;
(iii)no candidate may offer more than two papers which have been specified by the Faculty Board under Regulation 19;
(iv)a candidate may offer a dissertation on a topic approved by the Faculty Board in place of one paper chosen from Group D. Such a candidate may not offer more than one paper which has been specified by the Faculty Board under Regulation 19.

27. A student who is a candidate for Part IIB in the year next after obtaining honours in an Honours Examination other than Part I or Part IIA of the Theological and Religious Studies Tripos or who is an Affiliated Student1 shall offer:

either(a)two papers chosen from Group C; and both Papers D1 and D2
or(b)three papers chosen from Group C; and one paper chosen from Group D

provided that

(i)a candidate may offer Paper B1 in the same language instead of Paper C1 as one of the papers chosen from Group C;
(ii)a candidate may offer as an additional paper, either a language from Papers A1 or B1 which he or she has not previously offered, or a second language from Paper C1, if he or she is offering that paper, or one further paper chosen from Group C;
(iii)a candidate who has previously obtained honours in the Classical Tripos or the Oriental Studies Tripos may not offer in Paper A1 a language in which he or she has previously offered a paper in an Honours Examination;
(iv)no candidate may offer more than two papers which have been specified by the Faculty Board under Regulation 19;
(v)a candidate may offer a dissertation on a topic approved by the Faculty Board in place of one paper chosen from Group D. Such a candidate may not offer more than one paper which has been specified by the Faculty Board under Regulation 19.

With effect from the same date

The detail for certain papers has been amended so as to read as shown:

Paper A4. Christianity and the transformation of culture

This paper will introduce students to the history of Christianity by considering key periods and issues in the interaction of Christianity with the culture in which it is set. The topic of the paper will be announced annually by the Board.2

Paper A5. Who is Jesus Christ?

This paper will introduce some of the major themes and disciplines of Christian theology through a focus on Jesus Christ. The Faculty Board may from time to time prescribe texts for special study, and the lists of these texts will be available in the Faculty Office at the beginning of the Michaelmas Term.

Paper B5. Jesus in Gospel tradition

This paper will be concerned with central issues (arising from the primary sources and critical scholarship) in the study of the Gospels and the Historical Jesus. The Faculty Board may from time to time prescribe texts for special study, and the lists of these texts will be available in the Faculty Office at the beginning of the Michaelmas Term.

Paper C6. Disputed questions in the Christian tradition

The paper will examine theological problems arising within 'classical' Christian theology, in the context of theological loci including the doctrines of God and the Trinity, Christology, soteriology, and sanctification. The Faculty Board may from time to time prescribe texts for special study, and the lists of these texts will be available in the Faculty Office at the beginning of the Michaelmas Term.

Paper C12. Theology and science

The paper will cover (a) topics in theology where there is a substantive engagement with contemporary science (b) historical, philosophical, and methodological perspectives on the dialogue between theology and science.
