Master of Philosophy, Doctor of Philosophy, Master of Science, and Master of Letters: Notice

With immediate effect

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Board of Graduate Studies, have amended the regulations for the examinations for these degrees so that, if the Board consider that circumstances make it appropriate, an oral examination may be conducted by means of video-conference or other remote means.

Master of Philosophy (General Regulations)

One-year course

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 453)

Regulation 10(b).

By inserting in line 5 after the words 'both Examiners shall be present if an oral examination is held' the words ', provided that the Board of Graduate Studies in exceptional circumstances may permit the Examiners to conduct the oral examination by video-conference or other remote means'.

Two-year course

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 486)

Regulation 14.

By amending the second sentence so as to read:

If a candidate is examined orally on her or his thesis, the two Examiners shall both be present at the oral examination, provided that the Board of Graduate Studies in exceptional circumstances may permit the Examiners to conduct the oral examination by video-conference or other remote means. The two Examiners shall sign a joint certificate of the result of that examination.

Regulation 9.

By inserting in line 9 after the words 'if the examination is conducted orally, both Examiners shall be present' the words ', provided that the Board of Graduate Studies in exceptional circumstances may permit the Examiners to conduct the oral examination by video-conference or other remote means'.

Regulation 8.

By amending the second sentence so as to read:

The oral examination shall be held in the United Kingdom with both Examiners present unless permission to hold it elsewhere or, in exceptional circumstances, by video-conference or other remote means has been granted by the Board of Graduate Studies.

Regulation 9.

By deleting from line 2 the words ', shall be present at the oral examination,'.
