Sidney Sussex College

DIRECTOR OF MUSIC

Sidney Sussex College is seeking to appoint its first Director of Music. This is an important and exciting innovation in the cultural life of the College. The intention is to recruit an experienced member of the musical profession who will act as a resource for the whole College community and will inspire musical performance at a high level. The Director of Music will be expected to develop a coherent and well-planned programme of student-led music. It is envisaged that s/he will encourage the creation and sustain the activities of a College orchestra and other ensembles, and will encourage the development of individual musicians in Sidney. The Director of Music will also be expected to build upon the excellent recent progress made in the College's Chapel music and to provide a focus for sustained further improvement.

The post is part-time and envisages the commitment of up to ten hours a week averaged over a 45-week working year. Regular hours would be required during full term and such hours out of term as are necessary to fulfil the duties of the post. The tenure of the post will be for three years. The stipend will be up to £12,500 a year depending on qualifications and experience. However, as employment on a self-employed basis may suit some musicians, it may be feasible for employment to be arranged in this way. Should the successful candidate so wish, there is the opportunity to join the College's contributory Final Salary Pension Scheme. The Director of Music will have High Table dining rights. A College room will be provided as an office.

Further details about the post can be obtained from the Senior Tutor (tel. 01223 338870, e-mail senior.tutor@sid.cam.ac.uk), or from the College website at http://www.sid.cam.ac.uk/. Formal applications should be made by completing the application form available from the Senior Tutor and should also include a full curriculum vitae, details of musical accomplishments, notable performances, recordings and/or publications, and the names and addresses of two referees who should be asked to submit references directly to the College before the closing date. The College would also wish to receive a covering letter detailing the applicant's interest in, and suitability for, the post and a description of his/her vision for the role. Applications and references should be sent to Dr Keith Straughan, Senior Tutor, Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, CB2 3HU before the closing date of 9 June 2006.
