Two University Lectureships in the Department of Engineering

University Lectureship in Civil Engineering Fluid Mechanics/Water Engineering

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a University Lectureship in Civil Engineering Fluid Mechanics/Water Engineering, which may include Hydraulics and Hydrology. Candidates must be able to demonstrate outstanding research potential in a relevant subject area, and also be capable of devising lecture courses in fluid mechanics and projects to engage the interests of students working in Civil, Structural, and Environmental Engineering. University Lectureship in Electrical Engineering

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates working in the field of Electrical Engineering. The research opportunities in the Electrical Division are substantial, with facilities available in the newly constructed Electrical Engineering Building incorporating the Centre for Advanced Photonics and Electronics (CAPE), as well as in the Nano-IRC. Suitable candidates should have a proven record of scholarship and research in the broad research area of nano- and micro- materials and systems including work on NEMS and MEMS. Candidates will be expected to contribute directly to the research and teaching within the semiconductor materials, devices, and MEMS areas throughout the four-year Engineering Tripos. University Lectureship in Statistical/Chronic Disease Epidemiology

The Department of Public Health and Primary Care, one of Europe's premier university departments of population health sciences, seeks to appoint a permanent Lecturer with expertise in statistical epidemiology and/or chronic disease epidemiology. In addition to the establishment of new research programmes, there will be opportunities to work with large and new datasets and to collaborate with the newly established MRC Centre for Nutritional Epidemiology in Cancer Prevention and Survival and the MRC Biostatistics Unit, both of which are co-located with the University Department.

Computer Officer, Grade I (Institution Strategy Officer), in the University Computing Service

The University Computing Service (UCS) is seeking an Institution Strategy Officer to assist in the development and co-ordination of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) policy and strategy at all levels throughout the University (more than 130 Faculties and Departments and 31 Colleges). Key responsibilities include institutional liaison, consultancy, and review associated with every aspect of ICT service provision and strategy; the post-holder will also develop and support systems to facilitate the co-ordinated Institution Strategy activities of the UCS. The salary will be in the range of £35,254 to £39,452 a year, subject to review.

A good degree in a computing/IT-related subject or equivalent and broad experience (at least five years in an active ICT management role) of institutional policy-making and responsibility for staff, infrastructure, and resources is essential. The successful candidate will also have practical experience of information system integration and the implementation of collaboration tools including significant current experience of database design, development, and management, including web interfaces. A proactive interest in ICT including networking, multi-platform systems management, and user support is also required, preferably in an academic context. Excellent interpersonal skills are essential along with the ability to work independently and prioritize conflicting demands.

Administrative Officer, Grade I, in the Academic Division (School of Arts and Humanities)

The School Office, in support of the Council of the School of Arts and Humanities, is responsible for a wide range of activities including resource allocation, educational planning and strategy, and research facilitation. The post-holder will assist the Secretary of the Council of the School and the School Finance Manager in the administration of these activities, including liaising directly with those institutions within the scope of the School. The successful candidate will be educated to degree level and have previous relevant experience in a senior administrative post, including proven ability in managing resources and staff, preferably gained in a higher education establishment. Appointment will be to the retiring age subject to the satisfactory completion of a probationary period. The salary will be in the range of £27,929 to £33,646 a year.

Administrative Officer, Grade I (Assistant Finance Manager), in the School of Clinical Medicine

The School of Clinical Medicine seeks an Assistant Finance Manager to join the central administrative team and work closely with the School Finance Manager and departmental administrators. There are approximately 40 Departments and sub-units within the School of Clinical Medicine, with a combined annual expenditure of over £80m. The financial administration of these Departments is overseen by the School Office Resources division, led by the School Finance Manager.

The post-holder will assume responsibility for the continuous development and implementation of accounting and financial reporting systems across the Clinical School. Responsibilities will also include managing the School Accounts Office, preparing budgets and financial planning information, interrogating departmental accounts, high-level problem solving, and project work.

With a financial management or accounting background, and ideally with a recognized professional accountancy qualification, the successful candidate will be a team-orientated individual who has a hands-on proactive approach. Excellent IT (in particular, Excel) and interpersonal skills are essential. This is an excellent opportunity with a clear route for progression. The salary will be in the range of £27,929 to £33,646, dependant on experience.

Advisory Officer, Grade I (Building Surveyor), in the Estate Management and Building Service

Applications are invited for the post of Building Surveyor in the Estate Management and Building Service (EMBS). Based in the Maintenance and Minor Works Section, the post-holder will assume responsibility for the maintenance of the building fabric of a designated sector of the University's Operational Estate and lead an Area Team with a building technician and trainee.

Applicants should have graduated in a building discipline and have acquired or be working towards affiliation with a professional body (MRICS or equivalent). Experience of delivering a surveying service to a portfolio of buildings will be necessary, preferably within a university estate. Appointment will be to the retiring age subject to satisfactory completion of a probationary period. The pensionable scale of stipends for an Advisory Officer, Grade I, is currently £27,929 to £33,646 a year.

Temporary Lecturer in Extra-European History

The Faculty of History seeks to appoint a temporary Lecturer in Extra-European History to replace Professor Megan Vaughan during her Leverhulme Major Research Fellowship. The post will extend from 1 September 2006 until 31 August 2008. According to his/her special interests, the appointee will be expected primarily to contribute to the collaborative lecture courses mounted for the Part I papers 'The British Empire and the Commonwealth from 1780 to the present day' and 'The Expansion of Europe from the fifteenth century to the First World War', and the Part II paper 'The West and the 'Third World' from the First World War to the present day'. He/she will also be involved in the training and supervision of graduate students, and will be expected to contribute to the Faculty's research culture, to share in its administrative and examining duties, and to participate in its research seminars. The current stipend level is £25,565.

Part-time Course Director: Master of Studies in Social Enterprise and Community Development

Applications are invited for the part-time post of Course Director for the proposed M.St. Degree in Social Enterprise and Community Development, initially on a consultancy basis. The post is for ten days in each of the current (2005-06) and coming (2006-07) academical years, on a consultancy basis of £135 a day. Providing the course recruits well, the post will become a part-time (25% FTE) salaried post at step 11-15 of the general scale of stipends from 1 June 2007, for a fixed-term period of one year with the possibility of renewal. The post-holder will be expected to work from home.

The position has been established to lead the development, administration, and quality assurance of the degree course supported by an Academic Programme Manager (part-time) and a Secretary (part-time). The post offers the opportunity for a suitably qualified and experienced candidate to develop further work in this area at the Institute of Continuing Education. The Master of Studies in Social Enterprise and Community Development is a part-time degree course aimed at chief executives and senior officers in community-based regeneration organizations in deprived and socially excluded areas. The course will have an intake of about 20 students a year, who will study at Cambridge for a total of 30 days a year.

Applicants should have a good degree in a related discipline and some experience of teaching at postgraduate level, as well as good communication, administrative, and IT skills. The post would suit post-doctoral researchers or research students currently in the last year of their studies who wish to pursue an academic career.
