REGULATIONS FOR EXAMINATIONS: NOTICES BY THE GENERAL BOARD

The General Board give notice that, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board or other authority concerned, the regulations for certain University examinations have been amended as follows:

M.Phil. and M.St. Examinations under the supervision of the Degree Committee for International Studies

With effect from 1 October 2005

The Degree Committee for International Studies have revised the special regulations for the examinations in Contemporary European Studies, in International Relations, and in International Studies for the M.Phil. Degrees, and for the examination in International Relations for the M.St. Degree.

The students who are currently following these courses were informed that the changes in regulations were already in effect and have been preparing for the examinations under the regulations as set out below.

Examination in Contemporary European Studies for the degree of Master of Philosophy

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 462)

Regulation 1.

By amending sub-paragraph (c) so as to read:

(c)three further essays, each not exceeding 2,000 words in length and on a set topic falling within any of the fields listed below, provided that no more than one topic shall be chosen from any particular field:
  • The European legal system
  • Economic integration in Europe
  • European history
  • European security and foreign policy

Candidates may substitute not more than one essay with a topic from one of the following fields offered in the examination in International Relations for the degree of Master of Philosophy:

  • International relations theory
  • International security
  • International history
  • International economics
  • International law
  • International politics (except that students may not offer an essay under this topic on the Politics of European integration)

Regulation 2.

By replacing this regulation by the following new Regulations 2 and 3:

2. The arrangements for announcing the set topics shall be made by the Degree Committee. One of the four essays required under Regulations 1(b) and 1(c) shall constitute a three-hour examination paper and shall be written under examination conditions: candidates shall have a free choice of the essay to be treated this way, provided that the Degree Committee shall have power in a particular case to restrict a candidate's choice.

3. The examination may include, at the discretion of the Examiners, an oral examination on the thesis, or on the general field of knowledge within which this falls, or both.

Examination in International Relations for the degree of Master of Philosophy

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 473)

Regulation 1.

By replacing sub-paragraphs (b) and (c) by the following new sub-paragraph (b):

(b)four essays, each not exceeding 2,000 words in length and on a set topic falling within one of the following fields, provided that not more than one topic shall be chosen from any particular field, with the exception that up to two topics may be chosen from the field of international politics, provided that they come from different sub-fields:
  • 1. International relations theory
  • 2. International history
  • 3. International politics
  • 4. International security
  • 5. International economics
  • 6. International law

Candidates may substitute not more than one essay with a topic from one of the following fields offered in the examination in Contemporary European Studies for the degree of Master of Philosophy:

  • 1. The European legal system
  • 2. Economic integration in Europe
  • 3. European history
  • 4. European security and foreign policy

Regulation 2.

By replacing in line 2 the words 'Regulations 1(b) and 1(c)' by the words 'Regulation 1(b)'.

Regulation 3.

By amending the regulation so as to read:

3. The examination may include, at the discretion of the Examiners, an oral examination on the thesis, or on the general field of knowledge within which this falls, or both.

Examination in International Studies for the degree of Master of Philosophy

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 474)

Regulation 1.

By amending sub-paragraph (a) so as to read:

(a)two essays, each of not more 4,000 words in length, on subjects in International or Area Studies chosen by the candidate from a list announced by the Degree Committee;

Regulation 2.

By amending the regulation so as to read:

2. The examination may include, at the discretion of the Examiners, an oral examination on the thesis, or on the general field of knowledge within which this falls, or both.

Examination in International Relations for the degree of Master of Studies

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 499)

Regulation 1.

By replacing paragraphs (b) and (c) by the following new paragraph (b):

(b)four essays, each not exceeding 2,000 words in length and on a set topic falling within one of the following fields, provided that not more than one topic shall be chosen from any particular field:
  • 1. International relations theory
  • 2. International history
  • 3. International politics
  • 4. International security
  • 5. International law and economics

Regulation 2.

By replacing in line 2 the words 'Regulations 1(b) and 1(c)' by the words 'Regulation 1(b)'.

Regulation 3.

By amending the regulation so as to read:

3. The examination may include, at the discretion of the Examiners, an oral examination on the thesis, or on the general field of knowledge within which this falls, or both.
