Announcement of lectures, seminars, etc.

The following lectures, seminars, etc. will be open to members of the University and others who are interested:

Criminology. Dr Shadd Maruna, Reader in Criminology at Queen's University Belfast, and Dr Anna King, Lecturer in Criminology at Keele University, will jointly lead a public seminar entitled The state of redemption: does the British public believe young offenders can change and does it matter? on 18 May at 5.30 p.m. in Seminar Room B3, Institute of Criminology, Sidgwick Site.

Earth Sciences. Dr Steve Koonin, Chief Scientist, BP, will give a lecture entitled Energy trends and technologies for the coming decade on 25 May at 5.30 p.m. in Lecture Room LG18, Faculty of Law, West Road. Education. A Words about pictures: pictures about words seminar (jointly run by the Faculty of Education and Anglia Ruskin University School of Art) will take place on 17 May between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. in Room 1S3 of the Faculty of Education Building, 184 Hills Road. Simon Wilde, Master's student in Children's Book Illustration, of Anglia Ruskin University School of Art, will speak on Work-in-progress: animating the page. 12 June Conceptual mathematical thinking for five-year-old pupils?, by Dr Anne Cockburn and Dr Paola Iannone, of the University of East Anglia.

16 May Partnership in gender research: processes and outcomes, by Mr Mike Younger and Dr Molly Warrington, of the University of Cambridge.
8 June Using professional and academic literature with trainee teachers in the school setting: a hermeneutic-phenomenological study of eight subject mentors' experience, by Ms Christine Counsell, of the University of Cambridge.

16 May What's in a wave? ERP measures of developmental dyslexia, by Dr Tim Fosker, of the Centre for Neuroscience in Education.
30 May Genes and education, by Professor Robert Plomin, MRC Research Professor in Behavioural Genetics; Deputy Director of the Social, Genetic, and Development Psychiatry Centre, Kings College London.

Isaac Newton Institute. The Rothschild Visiting Professor, Deepak Dhar, of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, will give a seminar at the Institute at 5 p.m., on 15 May, entitled Picocanonical ensembles: a theoretical description of metastable states. Mathematics. The Mordell Lecture for 2006, entitled Ergodic theorems along polynomials: from combinatorial applications to challenges for physicists, will take place on 9 May, and will be given by Professor Vitaly Bergelson, of Ohio State University. The lecture will be held in Meeting Room 2 (Wolfson Room), Centre for Mathematical Sciences, Wilberforce Road, at 5 p.m., and will be followed by a reception.

McDonald Institute. A further series of informal lunch-time seminars will be held on Wednesdays at 1.15 p.m. in the seminar room on the ground floor of the McDonald Institute Courtyard Building on the Downing Site.

Oriental Studies. The Chuan Lyu Lecture 2006, entitled The rise of East Asia: threat or opportunity, will be delivered by Lord Patten of Barnes, Chancellor of the University of Oxford, at 5 p.m. on 9 May, in Lecture Room LG19, Faculty of Law, West Road. The lecture will be followed by a reception in the Atrium of the Faculty of Law. All are welcome.
