CSAH and CSHSS Early-Career Fellowships at CRASSH: Notice

The Schools of Arts and Humanities (CSAH), and Humanities and Social Sciences (CSHSS), have jointly launched an early-career scheme in association with CRASSH to allow University Teaching Officers (UTOs) and College Teaching Officers (CTOs) to apply for an additional term of research leave in order to develop a new research project. Up to four Fellows a term (two from each School) will be appointed for the academical year 2006-07. Under normal circumstances the leave should take place in Michaelmas Term 2006 or Lent Term 2007, although Easter Term 2007 would also be possible.

CRASSH will house two researchers a term; further space will shortly become available in the CSAH's dedicated School research space in the Raised Faculty Building. CRASSH will also provide a forum for presenting work-in-progress and mentoring support through regular contact with its visiting Fellows and research community. Among the researchers located at CRASSH, some preference will be given to those working on topics loosely connected with current CRASSH themes.

The value of the award is set at a flat rate of £5,000 per Fellow per term (if Easter Term leave is requested, the sum is reduced to £3,000). This amount will be transferred to the Fellow's Faculty or College to enable replacement teaching to be bought in. If the Fellow's teaching is split between a Faculty and a College, it will be the responsibility of the Faculty to negotiate the amount passed on to the College (up to a maximum of half of the total).

All UTOs and CTOs who have been in post for less than five years at the date of application are eligible, provided that they have obtained prior permission from their Faculty and/or College. UTOs must apply for leave under Statute D, II, 6(b), and the period of leave granted will not be reckonable for purposes of entitlement to sabbatical leave (granted under Statute D, II, 5).

A committee involving representatives from the two Schools and a representative from CRASSH will review the applications and make decisions. Applications for 2006-07 leave should be sent to the Administrator, CRASSH, 17 Mill Lane, Cambridge, by 15 May 2006. Each application should consist of a current curriculum vitae, including a list of publications, a one-page account of the proposed research project, a note from the applicant's Faculty and/or College indicating permission to apply, and letters from two referees (one external to the University). The results of the competition for 2006-07 will be announced by mid-June.
