University Lecturers

Appointments made at University Lecturer level will be for a probationary period of five years, with appointment to the retiring age thereafter. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer is currently £25,565 to £39,452 a year.

Three University Lectureships in Geography

Applications are invited for three University Lectureships, two in Human Geography and one in Physical Geography, to be filled from 1 October 2006 or other mutually agreeable starting date. The Human Geography Lectureships will be filled in any of the fields that relate to the Department's human geography research clusters. The Physical Geography Lectureship will be filled in the field of glaciology and related studies. The successful applicants will be expected to contribute to the Department's high level of research activity and to teach at undergraduate, Master's, and Ph.D. levels.

University Lecturer in Post-Medieval British Architecture

The Department of History of Art wishes to appoint from 1 October 2006, or as soon as possible thereafter, a University Lecturer who will be expected to contribute to the Department's research, teaching, and administration. The successful candidate will have a demonstrable research record, normally in the form of a Ph.D. Degree, as well as publications in the history of art and architecture, specializing in post-Medieval British architecture, set in a wider European field.

Applicants must have experience of teaching and be ready to contribute to lecturing to students at undergraduate and postgraduate level. Lecturers in the Department are generally expected to supervise postgraduate M.Phil. students where appropriate, and research students at Ph.D. level.

Director of Research (Administration and Development) in the Department of Engineering

Applications are invited for the post of Director of Research (Administration and Development) in the Department of Engineering to take up appointment as soon as possible.

The person appointed will be required to co-ordinate, administer, and develop the funding and housing of research activities throughout the Department. The duties will include fostering contacts with industry, Government, and grant-giving bodies. In addition, the person appointed will support the Head of Department in many areas of policy and development. It is expected that the appointee will have a good appreciation of research in engineering, a good first degree, and preferably a Ph.D. Degree in a relevant discipline, and should possess excellent analytical, communication, and organizational skills.

Appointment will be to the retiring age, subject to the satisfactory completion of a probationary period. The pensionable stipend for the Director of Research is currently £44,094 a year.

Isaac Newton Trust College Teaching Officer in the Faculty of Economics

In association with the Isaac Newton Trust, the Faculty of Economics wish to appoint a Newton Trust College Teaching Officer in Economics for five years from 1 October 2006. The successful candidate will be expected to offer teaching of interest to students studying Economics.

Under the terms of the scheme, Newton Trust College Teaching Officers (CTOs) must be Fellows of Colleges who are non-University Teaching Officers but receive their prime stipend from their College for teaching undergraduates. A Newton Trust CTO is appointed as an Affiliated Lecturer and is expected to give 24 lectures a year in the Faculty, to examine from time to time, to supervise research students, and to be involved in Faculty teaching arrangements. Two Temporary Lectureships in the Faculty of History

The Faculty of History seek to appoint two temporary Lecturers, the first in Early Modern British Economic and Social History, to replace Dr Alex Shepard during a one-year period of leave funded by a Philip Leverhulme Prize, and the second in Extra-European History, to replace Professor Megan Vaughan during her Leverhulme Major Research Fellowship.

Temporary Lecturer in Early Modern British Economic and Social History

The first post, Temporary Lecturer in Early Modern British Economic and Social History, will extend from 1 September 2006 until 31 August 2007. The appointee will be expected to contribute to the teaching of Paper 9 in Part I of the Historical Tripos, 'British economic and social history, c. 1500-1750'. The successful applicant may also be required to contribute lectures to the Historical Argument and Practice series, or to other undergraduate papers relating to the early modern period. The details of the lectures to be given must be co-ordinated with the other members of the Subject Groups and will so far as possible meet the experience and interests of the post holder. He/she will also be involved in the training and supervision of graduate students, and will be expected to contribute to the Faculty's research culture, to share in its administrative and examining duties, and to participate in its research seminars.

Temporary Lecturer in Extra-European History

The second post, Temporary Lecturer in Extra-European History, will extend from 1 Sepember 2006 until 31 August 2008. The appointee will be expected to lecture primarily for the following papers: 'The British Empire and the Commonwealth from 1780 to the present day'; 'Expansion of Europe from the fifteenth century to the First World War'; 'The West and the 'Third World' from the First World War to the present day'; and 'The history of the Indian sub-continent from the late eighteenth century to the present day'. He/she will also be involved in the training and supervision of graduate students, and will be expected to contribute to the Faculty's research culture, to share in its administrative and examining duties, and to participate in its research seminars.
