Announcement of lectures

The following lectures will be open to members of the University and others who are interested:

Inaugural Lecture. Professor Caroline Humphrey, of the Department of Social Anthropology, will deliver her Inaugural Lecture, entitled Alternative freedoms? A view from anthropology, to mark her appointment as the first Sigrid Rausing Professor of Collaborative Anthropology, at 5 p.m. on 10 May, in Room 9 of the Mill Lane Lecture Rooms. The lecture will be followed by a reception in the Beves Room at King's College.

Archaeology. Smuts Commonwealth Lectures Series 2006. Professor Tim Murray, Professor of Archaeology, of La Trobe University, will present a series of four lectures on the theme Commonwealth archaeology, to take place in Room 9 of the Mill Lane Lecture Rooms at 5 p.m. on the following dates:

3 May Creating Commonwealth and transnational archaeologies
4 May Archaeologies of indigenous contact, settler colonialism, and postcolonial societies
8 May Cities and nations: the movements of people and things 1
9 May Cities and nations: the movements of people and things 2

Mathematics. The Rouse Ball Lecture for 2006 will take place on 16 May and will be given by Professor Adrian Smith, FRS, Principal of Queen Mary, University of London. The Lecture is entitled The mathematics of million-dimensional probabilities, and will be held in Room 3 of the Mill Lane Lecture Rooms at noon.
