Readership in French Studies: Notice

The Department of French intends to appoint a Reader in French Studies. Applications in any field of French or Francophone Studies are welcome. (The Department offers scheduled papers in linguistics and in literature, thought, and visual culture.) Candidates will need to demonstrate an internationally recognized academic reputation for excellence in research and have an outstanding record of publication in the field of French or Francophone Studies. The successful candidate will be expected to take a leading role in the further development of the research culture of the Department, to collaborate in the teaching of at least one of the following Faculty M.Phil. courses, Linguistics, European Literature and Culture, Screen Media and Cultures, and to supervise Ph.D. students. In addition he or she will play a role in the teaching of language and scheduled papers at undergraduate level. An ability to contribute to a range of the Department's papers may be an advantage. Two posts, a Readership in French Studies and a University Lectureship in French Studies (see below), will be filled concurrently; it is likely that one of the two appointments will be made in the field of twentieth-century French or Francophone Studies, or postcolonial theory. The appointment will be from 1 October or as soon as possible thereafter.

Further particulars may be obtained from Ms Angela Myers (e-mail amjm2@cam.ac.uk), Secretary of the Appointments Committee, Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages, Sidgwick Avenue, Cambridge, CB3 9DA. Applications (fourteen copies), including a detailed curriculum vitae, a list of publications, a one-page statement of research interests and future plans, and a completed PD18 form giving the names and addresses of three referees, should be sent to the Secretary of the Appointments Committee at the address given above, by the closing date of 3 April. Candidates are requested to ask their referees to write directly to the Secretary by the same date. Any applicant wishing to be considered for both the Readership and the University Lectureship should complete two separate PD18 forms but may send one set (fourteen copies) of application papers.

Candidates may be invited to submit recent examples of their work for consideration by the Committee or, in the case of work which has been published, to draw the Committee's attention to items of special relevance to their application. They will also be asked to give a short presentation prior to interview. Presentations and interviews will take place on 18 and 19 April. Candidates are welcome to seek further information by contacting Dr Emma Wilson, Head of Department (tel. 01223 335009, e-mail efw1000@hermes.cam.ac.uk).
