Merton College

STIPENDIARY LECTURESHIP IN MODERN HISTORY

Merton College proposes to appoint a Stipendiary Lecturer in Modern History to teach up to eight contact hours per week in full term during the academical year 2006-07. The Lecturer will be paid a stipend of £20,044 (2005-06 rates) with entitlement to join USS and membership of Common Room with the right to take meals free of charge.

The successful candidate should have completed (or be about to complete) his/her doctoral studies in a relevant field within Modern History and will be able to teach the first-year course General History IV: 1815-1914 (Society, Nation and Empire); at least two General History second-year courses from the papers spanning 1715-1973; and parts of the first-year course Approaches to History and second-year course Disciplines of History. In addition, the Lecturer will undertake supervision of third-year theses in appropriate fields. It would be an advantage to be able to teach one or more of the first-year Optional Subjects or third-year Special or Further Subjects.

In addition to his/her teaching duties, the successful candidate will be expected to help with the organization of subjects involving History within College and to lend pastoral support to students reading for these degrees.
