University Lecturers

Appointments made at University Lecturer level will be for a probationary period of five years, with appointment to the retiring age thereafter. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer is currently £25,565 to £39,452 a year.

Three University Lectureships in the Department of Architecture

The Department of Architecture wishes to appoint from October 2006, or as soon as possible thereafter, three University Lecturers with a proven track record in research to contribute to its teaching, administration, and research.

One post-holder will be working with the newly established Professor in Sustainable Design in the simulation of key environmental aspects such as energy, lighting, and thermal or ventilation characteristics of buildings or urban spaces, and will possess hands-on experience of using computer tools such as ESPr, Radiance of CFD (or equivalent software).

The second post-holder is expected to be associated with the design and delivery of sustainable buildings. An understanding of the opportunities for, and barriers to, innovation as well as expertise in the national and international policy implications of the sustainable intent in the built environment is desirable.

The third post-holder will be associated with the design of sustainable structures. It is expected that applicants will have in-depth knowledge of structural engineering and will be interested in collaborating in research with the Department of Engineering.

Candidates for all three posts will be expected to have a demonstrable research record in the form of a Ph.D. Degree and publications, or the equivalent, in the technical or scientific aspects of building performance. They will be part of the Sustainable Design research group which is well established at the Department.

University Lectureship in the Centre of Latin-American Studies

The Centre of Latin-American Studies, in association with Robinson College, seeks to appoint a University Lecturer in the field of Latin-American Cultural Studies with effect from 1 October 2006. The successful candidate will hold a Ph.D. Degree in a field related to Latin-American Cultural Studies, will have a strong research and publications profile, native or excellent non-native command of Spanish and English, and extensive teaching experience at both undergraduate and postgraduate level within the fields of Latin-American cinema, visual arts, literature, or cultural studies.

The Lectureship will be the equivalent of a full-time post, but is initially made up of two separate contracts and a Fellowship. Two University Lectureships in the Faculty of Oriental Studies

Applications are invited for two University Lectureships in Modern Japanese Studies. The successful candidates will be expected to take up appointment on 1 October 2006 or as soon as possible thereafter. Successful applicants must have a good publication record and experience in teaching about modern Japan at both undergraduate and graduate level. Native or near-native fluency in English will be assumed and the ability to speak and read Japanese with ease is an absolute prerequisite. Historians and social scientists are encouraged to apply.

Director of Studies in General Practice in the Department of Public Health and Primary Care

Applications are invited for the post of Director of General Practice Studies, to take up appointment on 1 April 2006 or as soon as possible thereafter. Candidates will be fully qualified, practising General Medical Practitioners providing a minimum of three clinical sessions a week. They will be experienced in the delivery of medical education, preferably involving student doctors, and will have a Master's Degree or equivalent in a related academic subject. They will be able to devote to their work for the Faculty of Clinical Medicine the equivalent of four National Health Service sessions a week.

The post-holder will lead the delivery of the Unit's student doctor education programme, primarily on the Standard Clinical Course. Successful applicants will be likely to come from Practices wishing to take part in the development of undergraduate clinical education, general practitioner research, and continuing medical education. The salary will be on the current scale of £69,298 to £93,768, according to the level of seniority, pro rata. The appointment will be for up to five years, with the possibility of reappointment for periods not exceeding five years at a time.

Under-Librarian in the Special Collections and Collection Management Division

Applications are invited for the post of Head of the Genizah Research Unit. The Taylor-Schechter Genizah Collection is the most important collection of medieval Jewish manuscripts in the world, containing approximately a third of a million leaves from Hebrew, Aramaic, Arabic, and Judeo-Arabic religious tracts, literary works, and documents, dating principally from the period of the Fatimid and Ayyubid periods of governance in Egypt. The post-holder should have an appropriate academic degree and practical library experience; and should also have excellent management, organizational, and communication skills, strong financial acumen, and an enthusiasm for public education, electronic resources, conservation, and digitization. The salary will be on the current scale of £26,470 to £39,452 a year.

Assistant Under-Librarian in the Special Collections Division

Applications are invited for the post of Rare Books Specialist. The post-holder should have an informed understanding of the history of printing and book production, as well as a working knowledge of Latin and/or some modern European languages, and familiarity with cataloguing standards for rare books. The post-holder will also have excellent organizational and communication skills and be able to demonstrate a strong interest in reader services and collection development. The post-holder should have a good honours degree, research experience, and/or a professional qualification, together with practical experience of rare book librarianship. Applications are invited for the position as Team Leader (English-Language Cataloguing) in the Collection Development and Description Division. The post-holder should have a good honours degree, a postgraduate qualification in library and information studies together, preferably, with relevant experience in an academic library. The post-holder should have excellent IT, staff management, organizational, and communication skills, along with a flexible approach and the capacity to work in a rapidly changing environment. The salary will be on the current scale of £23,182 to £30,002 a year. Administrative post in the Institute for Stem Cell Biology

An experienced and resourceful administrator is sought for the new Institute for Stem Cell Biology (http://www.stemcells.cam.ac.uk/). Reporting directly to the Chair of the Institute, Professor Austin Smith, the administrator will play a central role in developing the Institute. The post-holder will be responsible for: commissioning and upkeep of premises and equipment; recruiting and managing clerical and technical support staff; liaising with University Departments and support services; and providing advice and assistance to the Chair and senior scientists on the strategic management of resources and finances.

Candidates should have good interpersonal skills and a strong background in laboratory research with current experience in building, personnel, and financial administration.

The funds for this post are available for up to three years in the first instance and the post may, subject to the availability of funding, be renewed for a further period or periods. The salary will be on the scale of £25,565 to £36,285 a year (currently under review) depending on qualifications and experience.
