Vacancies in the University

University Lecturers

Appointments made at University Lecturer level will be for a probationary period of five years, with appointment to the retiring age thereafter. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer is currently £25,565 to £39,452 a year.

Four University Lectureships in the Faculty of English

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for the following posts:

(a) University Lectureship in English (Literature in English since 1940)

This post is open to applicants with a primary research interest in any field of literature in English from 1940 to the present day.

(b) University Lectureship in English (Commonwealth and International Literature)

This post is open to applicants in any area of Commonwealth and international literature in English, but applications would be particularly welcome from those with a primary research interest in African or Afro-Caribbean literature.

(c) University Lectureship in English (Literature and Intellectual History/Literature and Philosophy/History and Theory of Literary Criticism)

This post is open to applicants with a primary research interest in any of the three areas broadly defined; the successful applicant will be expected to make a major contribution to the teaching of papers in the history of moral thought and the history of literary criticism, both of which engage with a wide range of authors from the Ancient Greeks to the present.

(d) University Lectureship in English (any field)

This post is open to applicants with a primary research interest in any field of literature in English from 1066 to the present. The successful applicant will be expected to make a major contribution to the teaching in one or more of the areas taught in the Faculty: Medieval literature, Renaissance literature, Literature from 1688-1847, Literature from 1830 to the present, Languages, Drama, American literature, Literary criticism, Commonwealth and international literature.

Appointment will be from 1 October 2006 or as soon thereafter as possible. Departmental Secretary, Grade A, in the Department of Chemistry (Buildings and Technical Matters)

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for this senior administrative post. The person appointed will report directly to the Head of Department, and will have the following responsibilities: management of all aspects of the fabric of the Department buildings, including allocation and utilization of space; supervision of new building projects and minor works in liaison with the University's Estate Management and Building Service; day-to-day administration and welfare of all assistant staff, including technical and secretarial staff, in liaison with the University's Personnel Division.

Applicants should have several years' experience in a related and relevant administrative role. The pensionable salary will be in the range of £27,117 to £40,091 a year (currently under review), depending on experience. Appointment will be subject to a probationary period of nine months.

Senior Under-Librarian in the Special Collections and Collection Management Division

Applications are invited for the post of Head of the Genizah Research Unit. The Taylor-Schechter Genizah Collection is the most important collection of medieval Jewish manuscripts in the world, containing approximately a third of a million leaves from Hebrew, Aramaic, Arabic, and Judeo-Arabic religious tracts, literary works, and documents, dating principally from the period of the Fatimid and Ayyubid periods of governance in Egypt. The post-holder should have an appropriate academic degree and practical library experience; and should also have excellent management, organizational, and communication skills, strong financial acumen, and an enthusiasm for public education, electronic resources, conservation, and digitization. The salary will be on the current scale of £26,470 to £39,452 a year.

Under-Librarian in the Special Collections Division

Applications are invited for the post of Rare Books Specialist. The post-holder should have an informed understanding of the history of printing and book production, as well as a working knowledge of Latin and/or some modern European languages, and familiarity with cataloguing standards for rare books. The post-holder will also have excellent organizational and communication skills and be able to demonstrate a strong interest in reader services and collection development. The post-holder should have a good honours degree, research experience, and/or a professional qualification, together with practical experience of rare book librarianship. Under-Librarian in the Collection Development and Description Division

Applications are invited for the position as Team Leader (English-Language Cataloguing) in the Collection Development and Description Division. The post-holder should have a good honours degree, a postgraduate qualification in library and information studies together, preferably, with relevant experience in an academic library. The post-holder should have excellent IT, staff management, organizational, and communication skills, along with a flexible approach and the capacity to work in a rapidly changing environment. The salary will be on the current scale of £23,182 to £30,002 a year. Administrative Officer, Grade II, in the Research Services Division of the University Offices (Applications and Awards Manager)

Applications are invited for the post of an Administrative Officer, Grade II (Applications and Awards Manager) in the Research Services Division. The post-holder is required to assist academic staff within the University in obtaining grant funding for their research by providing limited information on grant funding, system checking, and approving grant applications. They will also provide the School offices and the Departments with information which may be used for analysing current and historical data and profile of grant applications, together with supervising team members with the day to day application workload.

The post-holder will be educated to degree level and have previous relevant experience in an administrative post, preferably gained in a higher education establishment. Good communication, organizational, and IT skills, and the ability to work to tight deadlines are essential. The salary will be on the current scale of £23,182 to £30,002 a year.
