FORM AND CONDUCT OF EXAMINATIONS, 2007

Bachelor of Theology

The Faculty Board of Divinity give notice that, with effect from the examination to be held in 2007, the form of the examinations for the degree of Bachelor of Theology will be changed as follows:

Paper 5. Introduction to the Old Testament

Candidates will be required to attempt four questions from a choice of twelve relating to the history, literature, and theology of the Old Testament, and its relevance to Christian ministry.

Candidates will be supplied with unmarked NRSV Bibles but will not be required to show greater precision in Biblical references as a result of the availability of Bibles.

Paper 6. Introduction to the New Testament

Candidates will be required to attempt Question 1 and a further three questions, one from each section. Question 1 will require comment on two out of five prescribed texts. Section A will contain at least five questions on the Gospels; Section B will contain at least five questions on the Epistles; Section C will contain at least five questions on the historical Jesus and the historical context of the early Church.

Candidates will be supplied with unmarked NRSV Bibles but will not be required to show greater precision in Biblical references as a result of the availability of Bibles.

Paper 7. Introduction to Christian theology

(a) Candidates will be required to sit a two-hour examination and to answer two questions from at least six; and
(b) Candidates will be required to choose one essay title from a list approved by the Faculty Board.

Paper 8. Introduction to church history

(a) Candidates will be required to sit a two-hour examination and to answer two questions from at least six; and
(b) Candidates will be required to choose one essay title from a list approved by the Faculty Board.

Paper 9. Pastoral theology and pastoral practice

(a) Candidates will be required to sit a one-hour examination and to answer two questions from at least six on the skills of theological interpretation and to have an oral examination of up to an hour demonstrating skills of listening and faciliation; and
(b) Candidates will be required to choose one essay title from a list approved by the Faculty Board. Titles will focus on the role of the social sciences in theology.

Paper 10. Reading the Christian Bible

The examination paper will consist of three sections. Candidates will be required to answer one question from each section. Section A will contain at least four questions on the Old Testament. Section B will contain at least four questions on the New Testament. Section C will contain at least four questions on methodological issues and particular texts.

Candidates will be supplied with unmarked NRSV Bibles but will not be required to show greater precision in Biblical references as a result of the availability of Bibles.

Paper 11. Christian doctrine

(a) Candidates will be required to sit a two-hour examination and to answer two questions from at least six; and
(b) Candidates will be required to choose one essay title from a list approved by the Faculty Board.

Paper 12. Belief and practice in the early church

(a) Candidates will be required to sit a two-hour examination and to answer two questions from at least six; and
(b) Candidates will be required to choose one essay title from a list approved by the Faculty Board.

Paper 13. Reform and renewal in Christian history

Candidates will be required to choose two essay titles from a list approved by the Faculty Board.

Paper 14. Christian culture in the Western world

Candidates will be required to select two essay titles from a list approved by the Faculty Board.

Paper 15. Biblical exegesis

Candidates will be required to select two essay titles, one from each section of a list approved by the Faculty Board. Section A will include titles relating to Old Testament texts. Section B will include titles relating to New Testament texts.

*Paper 16. Further Old Testament studies

Candidates will be required to answer two questions chosen from one or more sections of the paper. Each section will focus on a single text or theme and contain at least four questions.

Candidates will be supplied with unmarked Hebrew and NRSV Bibles but will not be required to show greater precision in Biblical references as a result of the availability of Bibles.

*Paper 17. Further New Testament studies

Candidates will be required to answer two questions chosen from one or more sections of the paper. Each section will focus on a single text or theme and contain at least four questions.

Candidates will be supplied with unmarked Greek and NRSV Bibles but will not be required to show greater precision in Biblical references as a result of the availability of Bibles.

*Paper 18. The study of Christian mission

Candidates will be required to choose one essay title from a list approved by the Faculty Board.

*Paper 19. Christian ethics

Candidates will be required to choose one essay title from a list approved by the Faculty Board.

*Paper 20. Christian spirituality in historical context

Candidates will be required to choose one essay title from a list approved by the Faculty Board.

*Paper 21. Special study in theology for ministry

Candidates will be required to submit one 3,000-word essay on a topic approved by the Faculty Board.

Paper 22. The Bible and the Church's life

(a) Candidates will be required to sit a two-hour examination and to answer two questions from at least six. The paper will contain questions on general issues of biblical and pastoral interpretation and more specific questions about the Bible's use in church contexts; and
(b) Candidates will be required to choose one essay title from a list approved by the Faculty Board.

Paper 23. Further studies in Christian doctrine

(a) Candidates will be required to sit a two-hour examination and to answer two questions from at least six; and
(b) Candidates will be required to choose one essay title from a list approved by the Faculty Board.

Paper 24. Schism, conflict, and unity in Christian history

(a) Candidates will be required to sit a two-hour examination and to answer two questions from at least six; and
(b) Candidates will be required to choose one essay title from a list approved by the Faculty Board.

Paper 25. Judaism, Christianity, and Islam in encounter

(a) Candidates will be required to sit a two-hour examination and to answer two questions from at least six; and
(b) Candidates will be required to choose one essay title from a list approved by the Faculty Board.

*Paper 26. Patterns of Christian worship

Candidates will be required to sit a two-hour examination, consisting of two sections, and to answer one question from each section.

*Paper 27. One special subject, specified by the Faculty Board

Up to seven subjects may be prescribed. The candidate's examination entry shall state which subject he or she intends to offer.

Candidates will be required to choose one essay title from a list approved for each subject by the Faculty Board.

*Paper 28. One further subject, specified by the Faculty Board

Up to seven subjects may be prescribed. The candidate's examination entry shall state which subject he or she intends to offer.

Candidates will be required to choose one essay title from a list approved for each subject by the Faculty Board.
