Announcement of lectures, seminars, etc.

The following lectures, seminars, etc. will be open to members of the University and others who are interested:

Computer Laboratory. Seminars are held on Wednesdays at 4.15 p.m. in Lecture Theatre 1, Computer Laboratory, William Gates Building, 15 JJ Thomson Avenue, off Madingley Road.

15 February Towards an odour communication and synthesis system, by David Harel, of the Weizmann Institute of Science.
22 February Pervasive computing: shall we understand it? by Robin Milner, of the Computer Laboratory.
1 March Biological inspiration in human centred robotics, by Huosheng Hu, of the University of Essex.
15 March A history of e-mail, by Steve Kille, of Isode.com.

Criminology. Professor Christian Pfeiffer, Professor of Criminology, Juvenile Criminal Law, and Correction, at the University of Hanover, and Director of the Criminological Research Institute of Lower Saxony (KFN), will give a public seminar on Media, youth violence, and the crisis of young men, on 23 February, at 5.30 p.m. in room B3 at the Institute of Criminology, Sidgwick Avenue.

Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Gender Equality Network. The ESRC Gender Equality Network Seminar, entitled Technology and gender inequalities, will take place on 17 March, at the Centre for Research in the Arts, Social Sciences, and Humanities. The seminar is organized by Professor Jackie Scott, of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, as part of the ESRC's Social Science Week and the Cambridge Science Festival. Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics. Professor Avner Ash, of Boston College, will give the Fifty-second Kuwait Foundation Lecture, entitled Symmetries of algebraic numbers, at 5 p.m. on 14 February, in the Wolfson Room, Centre for Mathematical Sciences, Wilberforce Road (entrance on Clarkson Road before the Isaac Newton Institute).

Scott Polar Research Institute. Lectures are held on Saturdays at 8 p.m. (doors open at 7.30 p.m., late-comers may not be admitted) at the Scott Polar Research Institute, Lensfield Road.

11 February The crossing of Antartica, a film about the Commonwealth trans-Arctic expedition (1955-58). The film will be introduced by Peter Fuchs, son of Sir Vivian Fuchs.
25 February Shackleton and Elephant Island, by Jan Piggott, Keeper of the Archives of Dulwich College, London.
11 March Sir James Wordie: Polar crusader, by Michael Smith, biographer of Sir James Wordie.
25 March The Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research, by Peter Clarkson, former Executive Secretary of the Committee.
