Amendment to the tenure of certain fixed-term Professorships and a Readership: Notice

In their Report on Senior Academic Promotions for 2005-06 (Reporter, 2004-05, p. 983) the General Board recommended the establishment of Professorships for Dr F. E. Karet, Dr P. J. Lehner, and Dr D. C. Rubinsztein for a period of five years from 1 October 2005. In addition the General Board recommended the establishment of a Readership for Dr D. J. Owen for a period of five years from 1 October 2005. The establishment of the Professorships and the Readership was approved by Grace 3 of 19 October 2005. At the time of publication of the Report, Dr Karet, Dr Lehner, and Dr Rubinsztein held Readerships which had been established for periods of five years and the Departments concerned had confirmed that funding was available to meet the full cost of appointment to the Professorships for the period of their establishment; Dr Owen held a senior unestablished appointment and the Department concerned had confirmed that funding was available to meet the full cost of appointment to the Readership for the period of its establishment.

Since publication of the Report, the Faculty Board of Clinical Medicine have notified the General Board that funding has been identified to meet the full cost of appointment to these Professorships and to the Readership to the retiring age of the holders and that there now ceases to be any objective justification for the fixed-term tenure of these appointments. The General Board have therefore proposed to the Council that a Grace be submitted to the Regent House to extent the period of tenure of each Professorship and of the Readership to the retiring age of the holder. The Council have agreed to submit these Graces (Graces 5, 6, 7, and 8, p. 348).
