Two University Lectureships in the Department of Engineering (Information Engineering)

Applications are invited for two University Lectureships in the Department of Engineering. Information Engineering at Cambridge spans the broad areas of control, communications, signal, speech, image and vision processing, machine learning, and computational neuroscience. Applications are welcome from qualified candidates working in any of these areas. The Department's Research Strategy includes Engineering for the Life Sciences and Cognitive Systems and applications from candidates who would contribute directly to these themes would be particularly welcome (please see http://www.eng.cam.ac.uk/research for further information).

The successful candidates will have or be expected to develop a record of world-class research commensurate with the Department's international reputation and top-rank research rating. Teaching responsibilities will include contributing to undergraduate courses, supervising final-year projects, and supervising graduate students.

Information about the Department can be found at http://www.eng.cam.ac.uk/. Further particulars and an application form may be obtained from the Secretary of the Department (Personnel), Department of Engineering, Trumpington Street, Cambridge, CB2 1PZ (tel. 01223 332615, fax 01223 766364, e-mail personnel-enquiries@eng.cam.ac.uk). Applications should be sent to this address no later than 7 April 2006 and should include a completed form PD18, a curriculum vitae, a list of publications, and a one-page statement of research interests and future plans. Informal enquiries may be directed to Professor Steve Young, Head of the Information Engineering Division, by e-mail (sjy@eng.cam.ac.uk).

Three University Lectureships in the Department of Physics (Cavendish Laboratory)

Applications are invited for three University Lectureships in the Department of Physics. Applicants may be from any areas of physics, but there is some preference for the following areas: up to two posts in bio-medical and/or soft condensed matter physics and one post in experimental quantum condensed matter physics (this appointment will be seen as part of a wider strategy which envisages a major thrust in the general area of quantum matter, viewed broadly to include optical physics, atomic physics, and condensed matter physics). The University is intending to make a major investment in medical and biological physics with the building of a new research centre in the Department of Physics and the appointment of a Herchel Smith Professor of the Physics of Medicine.

Further details of the posts and of the current research and teaching programme of the Laboratory may be obtained from Professor P. B. Littlewood, Cavendish Laboratory, J J Thomson Avenue, Cambridge, CB3 0HE (e-mail hod@phy.cam.ac.uk) and also from the Department's website (http://www.phy.cam.ac.uk/).

Applications, including a curriculum vitae, a statement (up to six pages) of research experience to date and of research plans for the future, and a completed form PD18 should be sent to Professor Littlewood by 24 March 2006.

Tenure-track Academic Fellowship in the Department of Pharmacology

The Department of Pharmacology in the School of Biological Sciences wishes to appoint to a tenure-track Research Councils' UK (RCUK) Academic Fellowship in the field of Neuronal Plasticity no later than 30 September 2006.

Candidates should have a promising record of research in the area of neuronal plasticity interpreted in its widest sense, and including (amongst other areas) neuronal stem cells, neurogenesis and neuronal development, the cellular basis of learning and memory, control of neuronal phenotype, and neuronal apoptosis. Further particulars of the research interests of the Department can be found at http://www.phar.cam.ac.uk/.

To meet RCUK conditions, the successful applicant must not hold, or have been offered previously, a permanent academic post. The person appointed will be expected, in time, to participate in the training and supervision of graduate students and to contribute to undergraduate teaching and examining, with opportunities in both the Natural Sciences Tripos and the Medical and Veterinary Sciences Tripos. The successful candidate will be expected from the outset to participate in public outreach activities for the subject.

The duration of the Fellowship is five years. It is expected that a permanent post will be available thereafter to which the applicant will be appointed, subject to having met the normal University probationary requirements. Applicants who have existing salary support for at least two years beyond September 2006 will be particularly welcome. The salary for this post is currently £25,565 to £36,285 a year, but the University will be introducing a new pay and grading structure with effect from 1 January 2006 which, it is hoped, will result in a small upward adjustment.

Applicants are asked to complete a PD18 application form and to submit their application including a curriculum vitae, a statement covering research experience and future plans (not more than four sides of A4 paper), and the names and addresses (including e-mail addresses) of three referees to Professor P. A. McNaughton, Department of Pharmacology, Tennis Court Road, Cambridge, CB2 1PD, by 17 February 2006. Candidates wishing to discuss the position informally are invited to contact Professor McNaughton (tel. 01223 334012, e-mail pam42@cam.ac.uk).
