Two University Lectureships in the Department of Chemistry

Polymer Synthesis

The Department of Chemistry wishes to appoint a University Lecturer in Polymer Synthesis to take up appointment as soon as possible. Candidates should have a strong research background in the synthesis of polymeric materials. The Melville Laboratory is a multi-disciplinary unit, and the successful applicant will be expected to provide chemical expertise to research programmes which interface with materials science, physics, and/or engineering.

The successful candidate must be able to make a significant contribution to the undergraduate teaching programme in the Department.

Theoretical Chemical Biology

The Department of Chemistry wishes to appoint a University Lecturer in Theoretical Chemical Biology to take up appointment on 1 October 2006 or as soon as possible thereafter. The Department is keen to expand its activities at the interface between theory, computation, and biology, and welcomes applications from those with a strong research background in theoretical aspects of the molecular and chemical basis of biological systems

The successful candidate must be able to make a significant contribution to the undergraduate teaching programme in the Department.

Three University Lectureships in the Department of Engineering

Computational Engineering for the Life Sciences

Research activity for this post could include quantitative modelling approaches in engineering applied to biological systems or intervention techniques. Applications range from, but are not limited to, molecular motors, the folding of proteins, the mechanics of the cell, soft, and hard tissue, and physiology. It is hoped the successful candidate will take up this post no later than 1 September 2006.

Mechanics of Biological Materials

Research activity for this post should include experimental approaches to an understanding of biological materials and/or the development of artificial materials with biological function. Applications range from, but are not limited to, the mechanics of hard and soft tissue from sub-cellular to tissue level, and the development of new materials with application to tissue and prosthetics. It is hoped the successful candidate will take up this post no later than 1 January 2007.

For both posts there are substantial opportunities for interaction with established research groups to allow an inter-disciplinary approach to biological problems. The appointees will contribute to the new teaching initiative of Engineering for the Life Sciences, and will develop and teach pertinent courses.

Engineering Design (Mechanics, Materials, and Design Division)

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a University Lectureship in Engineering Design. The successful candidate will take up the appointment on 1 September 2006 or as soon as possible thereafter. Candidates should have a proven record of scholarship and research in the area of Engineering Design, and will be expected to contribute directly to the research and teaching of the Engineering Design Centre (EDC), which forms part of the Mechanics, Materials, and Design Division. The EDC enjoys an international reputation for high-quality, innovative, and industry-relevant research, and has secure funding as an EPSRC-funded Integrated Manufacturing Research Centre (IMRC). It is particularly active in the aerospace, healthcare, and product design sectors. In addition the post will involve contributing to the teaching of the undergraduate course in Mechanical Engineering, leading to the B.A. and M.Eng. Degrees.

University Lectureship in the Faculty of Music

The Faculty of Music invites applications for a University Lecturer to take up appointment on 1 October 2006 or as soon as possible thereafter. The present Faculty is strong in analysis, composition, ethnomusicology, historical musicology, and music cognition. The person appointed will be expected to contribute outstanding teaching and research to at least one of these areas.

Assistant Treasurer (Finance Manager)

A vacancy has arisen for the position of Finance Manager in the School Office of the School of the Humanities and Social Sciences. The post-holder will develop and support financial planning, analysis, and decision-making within the School and the University.

The main responsibilities of this post include preparation and presentation of the School's financial plans and budgets, developing information to support financial decisions, assisting and supporting Faculties and Departments with financial analysis, advising on financial processes and procedures, and acting as a conduit between the School's Faculties and Departments and the central Finance Division.

Candidates will be qualified accountants with a minimum of four years' experience gained within a medium-sized or large organization, will possess strong analytical and interpersonal skills, and will have a proven ability to interpret and communicate financial information including to non-finance professionals, will have experience of financial planning, budgeting, monitoring, and financial control, and will have the maturity and integrity to liaise and influence at the highest levels. The pensionable scale of stipends for an Assistant Treasurer is currently £25,565 to £39,452 a year.

Administrative Officer, Grade II (Finance Adviser)

The Financial Planning and Analysis team have responsibility for preparing budgetary information and providing financial advice, management information, and support to Departments across the University (total turnover is approximately £460m).

The post-holder will provide support to a specific portfolio of Departments, will respond to demands, and will be pro-active in identifying potential problem areas, suggesting corrective action, where applicable. This will involve working closely with staff at all levels across the University.

The post-holder must have excellent communication, analytical, and IT skills and be a strong team player, and will ideally be working towards a recognized professional accounting qualification, with three years' experience, preferably in a large organization. The pensionable scale of stipends for an Administrative Officer, Grade II, is currently £23,182 to £30,002 a year.

Assistant Finance Manager

An Assistant Finance Manager post has been created in the School Office of the School of Biological Sciences. The post-holder will work alongside the School Finance Manager to support financial management procedures across the School and within Departments.

The main responsibilities include implementation and continued support/monitoring of School-wide financial policies and procedures. There will be opportunities to work with Departments to develop their financial capabilities and to contribute to the development of new procedures for Departments and the School.

Candidates should have excellent analytical and communication skills (the post-holder will be working with staff at many different levels) and will either hold, or be working towards, a recognized professional accounting qualification. The salary for this post will be between £27,929 and £33,646 a year. The limit of tenure for this post is three years.

Functional Analysts

The Financial Systems Operations Group (FSOG) is seeking two Functional Analysts to support the University's use of Oracle Financials. The post-holders will be expected to investigate the University's use of the system and improvements in process and work flows; develop specifications for changes agreed through the change process; identify solutions to user problems not resolved by module helpdesks; participate in project teams tasked with implementing the roadmap for future development of Oracle Financials.

Candidates should have experience of supporting and/or implementing Oracle Financials, preferably in a public sector environment. Excellent understanding of the Oracle Financials database structure and tables is required, including knowledge of SQLPlus and other query tools, together with detailed functional knowledge of at least one system module. Candidates should possess either a part or full accountancy qualification, or have strong financial experience.

The salary for these posts will be between £27,929 and £33,646 a year. The limit of tenure for these posts will be a maximum of eighteen months.
