The Faculty Board of Modern and Medieval Languages give notice that, with effect from the examinations to be held in 2006, the form of the examinations for certain papers for the Modern and Medieval Languages Tripos, and the Linguistics Tripos, will be changed as follows:
The paper will be divided in three sections: 'Section A: 'Pre-1850 Hispanic texts'; Section B: 'Post-1850 Hispanic texts'; Section C: 'Topics in Hispanic literature'. Candidates will be required to answer three questions, not more than one of which may be taken from Sections A and B, and at least one of which must be taken from Section C. Section C questions will have to be answered with reference to two or more set texts from different sections.
The examination for this paper will consist of two exercises, (a) translation from English into the foreign language (two hours), and (b) listening comprehension test and critical commentary on the content of a seven- to nine-minute video clip (one and a half hours).
Previously entitled 'Listening comprehension', this paper aims to assess candidates' ability to understand the foreign language in its spoken form and to respond in writing to some of the issues raised in the video clip.
Candidates will be required to answer questions on any three topics.
Previously entitled 'Introduction to linguistic theory', the paper will be divided into two sections A (Theory) and B (Analysis and interpretation). Candidates for Modern and Medieval Languages Part IB may answer any three questions. All other candidates, including those from other Triposes, must answer at least one from Section A.
The paper will contain questions on Syntax, Semantics, Pragmatics, Morphology, Phonology, Phonetics, and Linguistic theory.
Previously entitled 'Introduction to language history and use', the paper will be divided into two sections A (Theory) and B (Analysis and interpretation). Candidates for Modern and Medieval Languages Part IB may answer any three questions. All other candidates must answer at least one from Section A.
The paper will contain questions on Historical linguistics, Sociolinguistics, and Psycholinguistics. Questions will no longer be set specifically on Language and thought.
