Announcement of lectures, seminars, etc.

The following lectures, seminars, etc. will be open to members of the University and others who are interested:

Computer Laboratory. Paul Watson will talk on Databases in grid applications: locality and distribution, on 16 November, at 4.15 p.m. in Lecture Theatre 1, William Gates Building, 15 JJ Thomson Avenue, off Madingley Road.

McDonald Institute. The Seventeenth McDonald Lecture will be given by Professor Tjeerd van Andel, of the Department of Earth Sciences, at 5 p.m. on 16 November, in Mill Lane Lecture Room 3. The lecture is entitled A matter of choice: tolerance or selectivity in Stone Age resource exploitation.

Modern and Medieval Languages. The annual Norman MacColl Symposium will take place on 18 November, from 2 p.m. in the Trust Room, Fitzwilliam College. The topic of this year's symposium is Catalan studies. The Norman MacColl Lecture, to be given by Professor Montserrat Guibernau, of Queen Mary, University of London, will be entitled Catalan nationalism: Francoism, transition, and democracy, and is scheduled for 4.45 p.m. In connection with the symposium, the World Theatre Cafe will perform a reading of plays by three Catalan women on 19 November at 6 p.m. in the Auditorium, Fitzwilliam College.

Isaac Newton Institute. The Rothschild Visiting Professor, Vincent Moncrief, of Yale University, will give a seminar at 5 p.m., on 21 November, entitled Curvature propagation in general relativity.
