Announcement of lectures, seminars, etc.

The following lectures, seminars, etc. will be open to members of the University and others who are interested:

Biotechnology. The following seminars will take place on Thursdays in the Biochemistry Lecture Theatre (Sanger Building), Institute of Biotechnology, Tennis Court Road, from midday until 1 p.m.

10 November Microbial life in rocks - from craters to biotechnology, by Professor Charles Cockell, of the Open University.
1 December The foreseeability of real anti-ageing medicine: a survey of relevant biotechnologies and likely timeframes, by Dr Aubrey de Grey, of the Department of Genetics.

Criminology. On 10 November, Ms Antje Pedain, of Magdalene College, will give a lecture entitled The Amnesty Committee of the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission: research design and results of an empirical study of the Committee's amnesty practice. The lecture will be held at the Institute of Criminology (Seminar Room B3) and will start at 5.30 p.m.

Slavonic Studies. On 23 November, at 5 p.m., in the Umney Theatre, Robinson College, Professor Sheila Fitzpatrick, of the University of Chicago, will give the Fourth Dame Elizabeth Hill Memorial Lecture, entitled The Soviet Union in the twenty-first century.

Theoretical Geophysics. The Departments of Earth Sciences and Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics present a series of seminars on Theoretical Geophysics, which will take place at 2.05 p.m. on Thursdays in Room MR15, Centre for Mathematical Sciences, Wilberforce Road. A varied, informal luncheon will be supplied in the Common Room of Pavilion H before each seminar at a cost of £2.50 per person, commencing at 1.05 p.m.

10 November Carbon dioxide sequestration, by Mike Bickle, of the Department of Earth Sciences.
24 November Wave climate from space - from Geosat to Hurricane Katrina, by Peter Challenor, of the University of Southampton.
1 December When oceans freeze over, by John Wettlaufer, of Yale University.

Zoology. All seminars are held in the Part II Lecture Theatre, First Floor, Department of Zoology, Downing Street, on Wednesdays from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.

23 November Evolution of developmental mechanisms controlling leaf form, by Miltos Tsiantis, of the University of Oxford.
7 December The making of a new head - insights from developmental and comparative studies into the evolutionary origin of vertebrate placodes, by Gerhard Schlosser, of the University of Bremen.
25 January Evolution and development: diversification of signalling processes as revealed by nematode case studies, by Ralf Sommer, of the Max Planck Institute, Tübingen.
8 February Segments and segmentation in myriapods, by Giuseppe Fusco, of the University of Padova.
