MICHAEL AND MORVEN HELLER RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP IN COMPUTING SCIENCE

Applications are invited for the Fellowship, tenable for three years from a date after 1 October 2005 at St Catharine's College. Candidates should normally have completed a doctorate in Computer Science, and preferably will be under the age of 35.

The Fellow is to carry out research that enhances the application of computer science to medical research. The Fellow will be based in the College and in the University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory and it is anticipated that he or she will foster links between groups at Addenbrooke's Hospital, the main biomedical campus of the University. One possible area for collaboration is with the Wolfson Brain Imaging Centre at Addenbrooke's in the computational modelling of human brain connectivity using magnetic resonance imaging to assess the interaction between brain regions and how are these are affected by disease or injury and explain the symptoms of the patient.

Work in the Computer Laboratory encompasses Computer Science, along with many aspects of Engineering, Technology, and Mathematics. The Laboratory undertakes research in a broad range of subjects within the discipline of Computer Science, from theory, through systems, to applications. Current research groups work on artificial intelligence, automated reasoning, natural language and information processing, programming, graphics and interaction, computer architecture, security, systems, digital technology, and theory and semantics.

The Fellow may be requested to provide tutorial teaching to appropriate undergraduates in the College (up to a maximum of six hours a week) and to assist in the Direction of Studies of undergraduates reading Computer Science. The teaching will be separately remunerated.

The stipend for the Fellowship will be on the appropriate level of the University academic scale at a point determined by qualifications and experience; in addition, he or she would enjoy statutory privileges of Fellows of the College, but these privileges would not include membership of the Governing Body.

Full details of the Computer Laboratory's research activities can be found at http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/UoCCL/research.

Further information about the appointment can be obtained from Mrs Margaret Levitt, Departmental Secretary, Computer Laboratory, William Gates Building, JJ Thompson Avenue, Cambridge, CB3 0FD (tel. 01223 334603, e-mail departmental-secretary@cl.cam.ac.uk).

Applications, including a current curriculum vitae and the names of three referees, should be sent to the Master's Secretary, St Catharine's College, Cambridge, CB2 1RL, by 18 November, with the envelope clearly marked 'Heller Fellowship'.
