Oriental Studies Tripos, 2006

The Faculty Board of Oriental Studies give notice that, with effect from the examination to be held in 2006, the form of the examinations for the Oriental Studies Tripos will be changed as follows:

Chinese

C. 11. Literary Chinese texts, 3

The paper will contain passages from seen texts and unseen material for translation. Candidates will be allowed to use copies of the Chinese-Chinese dictionaries provided.

C. 12. Aspects of traditional Chinese culture

The paper will be divided into two parts, one for translation and one for essay questions. In part one, candidates will be asked to translate two passages from relevant texts in literary Chinese. In part two candidates must answer one of three essay questions related to traditional Chinese society and history. Copies of a Chinese-Chinese dictionary will be available for candidates to use.

Egyptology

E. 21. Ancient Egypt, 4 (Art and artefacts)

This paper will be examined by (a) a written paper and (b) the submission of records of such course-work undertaken during the courses leading to the examination as shall be determined from time to time by the Faculty Board. Both parts will carry equal weight.

Part (a) will consist of a three-hour written paper at the end of the second year; Section A will consist of two questions both of which are to be attempted, Section B will contain five questions of which candidates are required to answer two. All four questions will be of equal value (50% of the marks).

For part (b) the recommended course-work is:

(i) two illustrated reports arising from the study-trip to Egypt (to be undertaken between the Easter vacation during the first year of Part II and the following Christmas vacation inclusive): a general one covering the study-trip as a whole and one specifically devoted to a site or collection of material. These should be ready for handing in by the division of the Lent Term of the second year of the Part II course (together 35% of the marks);

(ii) a short museum-based project to be completed during the first half of the Part II course (15% of the marks).

Early civilizations of the Aegean and Near East

N. 6. Early civilizations: comparative and theoretical issues

This paper will consist of nine questions, three of which should be attempted.

Japanese

J. 12. Japanese texts, 1

This paper will contain four unseen passages for translation into English.

Candidates will be required to translate passages 1 and 2, and either passage 3 (a literary text) or passage 4 (a social science text).

J. 13. Japanese texts, 2

This paper will consist of two sections. In Section A candidates will be required to translate one unseen passage from Japanese into English from a choice of two. In Section B candidates will be required to translate, from Japanese into English, two passages taken from texts taught during the year.

South Asian studies

SA. 5. Composition, and grammar or essay, in an Indian language

This paper will be in two sections. Section A is for Sanskrit students and contains (a) one translation into Sanskrit (50 marks) and (b) questions on Sanskrit grammar, out of which candidates must answer three (50 marks). Section B is for Hindi students and contains (a) a translation into Hindi (50 marks) and (b) a choice subjects for one essay in Hindi (50 marks). Candidates must answer either Section A or Section B.
