Report of the General Board on the re-establishment of a Professorship of Cognitive Neuroscience

The GENERAL BOARD beg leave to report to the University as follows:

1. In their Report on certain fixed-term Professorships and Readerships (Reporter, 2000-01, p. 814), the General Board proposed, inter alia, the establishment of a MRC Professorship of Cognitive Neuroscience in the Department of Experimental Psychology for Professor Lorraine Tyler for the period 1 October 2001 to 30 September 2005. The recommendations of this Report were approved by Grace 8 of 25 July 2001.

2. Professor Tyler leads research in the field of brain and language within the Department of Experimental Psychology and has established the well-respected Centre for Speech and Language in the Department on her MRC Programme grant. The Faculty Board of Biology have advised the General Board of their view that the re-establishment of the Professorship of Cognitive Neuroscience for Professor Tyler is integral to the Department's future strategic plans since it will provide ongoing leadership within one of the Department's main research themes. Professor Tyler's work also interacts strongly with current research in other Departments within the School of the Biological Sciences and the School of Clinical Medicine. The Council of the School of the Biological Sciences support this proposal.

3. The General Board accordingly recommend the re-establishment of the Professorship of Cognitive Neuroscience in the Department of Experimental Psychology until 30 September 2012, and Professor Tyler's appointment to it. The costs of the Professorship will be met by the Medical Research Council in the first instance and thereafter from funds made available by the School of the Biological Sciences.

4. The General Board recommend:

That the MRC Professorship of Cognitive Neuroscience, established by Grace 8 of 25 July 2001, be re-established as the Professorship of Cognitive Neuroscience from 1 October 2005 until 30 September 2012 for Professor Lorraine Tyler, placed in Schedule B of the Statutes, and assigned to the Department of Experimental Psychology.
