Report of the General Board on the establishment of a Professorship of Management Studies: Notice

4 July 2005

The Council have received the remarks made at the Discussion of this Report on 10 May 2005 (Reporter, p. 689) and have referred them to the General Board who have commented as follows:

Professor G. R. Evans remarked on the role of the Director as set out in the Report. The General Board see no conflict between the Director's role, as Head of the Department, to organize the teaching and research in the Department, and as Head of the Institute to lead a major fund-raising campaign. The purpose of the Report is to propose that the Directorship is held concurrently with a Professorship in order to secure the necessary combination of academic standing together with the experience, skills, and qualities required to lead the Institute.

Professor Evans and Dr S. J. Cowley also commented on the stipend of the Director. Under the current arrangement the stipend of the Director is determined as the professorial stipend plus a Schedule 3 payment as Head of Department. However, it should be noted that, by the time of appointment, different arrangements may be in place if the proposals for a new pay and grading structure in the University have been approved.

The Council are submitting a Grace (Grace 3, p. 906) to the Regent House for the approval of this Report.
