University Lecturer

Appointments made at University Lecturer level will be for a probationary period of five years, with appointment to the retiring age thereafter. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer is currently £24,820 to £38,303 a year.

University Lectureship in the Department of Engineering

Applications for a University Lectureship in Structural Engineering are invited from suitably qualified candidates, to take up appointment as soon as possible.

Candidates should have a proven record of scholarship and research in any area of Structural Engineering; an area of particular interest for this appointment is computational aspects of structural engineering. A proven ability to secure external research funding will be an asset. The Lecturer will be expected to contribute directly to the research and teaching of the Structures Group, which forms part of the Civil, Structural, Environmental, and Petroleum Division, and to collaborate in research with other members of the Structures Group. In addition, the post will involve contributing to the teaching of the undergraduate course in Engineering, leading to the B.A. and M.Eng. Degrees, particularly in structures and related subjects.

Administrative Officer, Grade I, in the Academic Division of the University Offices (Department of Engineering)

Applications are invited for the post of Administrative Officer with duties in the Department of Engineering. The post-holder will join one of the largest Departments in the University as an administrator to support teaching and examinations activities. The post-holder will work with senior academics and an experienced administrative team to shape and implement policies, and will carry responsibility for ensuring that all of the teaching and examinations processes run smoothly.

Candidates should be educated to degree level and have previous relevant experience in an administrative post, preferably gained in a higher education establishment. Good communication, organizational, and IT skills, and the ability to work to tight deadlines are essential.

Appointment will be to the retiring age subject to the satisfactory completion of a probationary period. The pensionable scale of stipends for an Administrative Officer, Grade I, is currently £27,117 to £32,666 a year.

Advisory Officer, Grade I, in the Estate Management and Building Service of the University Offices

The Estate Management and Building Service is seeking an Advisory Officer, Grade I (Electrical Engineer) to take up appointment as soon as possible. The person appointed will work as part of the professional in-house design team dedicated to minor works procurement.

Applicants should have a degree in an electrical engineering discipline, have or be working towards membership of a relevant professional body (CIBSE or equivalent), and be experienced in managing electrical design work for a wide variety of building types. The pensionable scale of stipends for an Advisory Officer, Grade I, is currently £27,117 a year, rising by five annual increments to £32,666.

Department Manager in the School of Clinical Medicine (Department of Oncology)

A Department Manager is required to assist the Head of Department in a wide-ranging work portfolio including strategic and financial management; financial planning and analysis; co-ordination of all research grant, estate, and personnel matters; and maintaining strong relationships with both the central University authorities and key external sponsors, principally the National Health Service, Medical Research Council, and Cancer Research UK.

The Department of Oncology is involved in clinical research and teaching with an annual expenditure of nearly £8 million; it has over 150 staff and is located in five buildings. The person appointed will assume responsibility for the development and implementation of accounting systems and procedures across the Department; oversight of an Accounts Team; monitoring of the Department's finances and budget preparation; the provision of management information; preparing cases of need; oversight of Health and Safety issues; and other general administrative duties to support the smooth running of the Department. The salary for this post is between £27,117 and £32,666 a year.

An experienced finance manager and/or administrator, ideally with a recognized professional accountancy qualification, the post-holder will be a team-orientated individual who has a hands-on proactive approach. Excellent IT and interpersonal skills are essential. Appointment will be for three years in the first instance.

Temporary Lector in Hindi and Sanskrit in the Faculty of Oriental Studies

The Faculty of Oriental Studies wish to appoint a Temporary Lector in Hindi and Sanskrit. Applications are invited from candidates with knowledge of Hindi equivalent to that of a native speaker, and with an excellent knowledge of Sanskrit. Candidates must have a good command of English. The successful candidate will be asked to teach undergraduate language and literature courses in Hindi and Sanskrit at beginner, intermediate, and advanced level. The post will involve on average twelve hours' language teaching a week during term time. Previous teaching experience in both Hindi and Sanskrit is essential.

The pro-rata annual salary scale runs from £16,149 to £19,460 (i.e. the nine-month appointee will earn a salary in the range of £12,112 to £14,595). This appointment is available from 1 October 2005 until 30 June 2006.
