Announcement of lectures and seminars

The following lectures and seminars will be open to members of the University and others who are interested:

Cambridge Committee for Russian and East European Studies (CAMCREES). The Third Annual Ukrainian Lecture in Contemporary Ukrainian Studies will be presented by Professor Dominique Arel, of the University of Ottawa. The lecture is entitled 'Orange revolution': analysis and implications of the 2004 presidential election in Ukraine. The lecture will take place at 5 p.m., on 25 February, in the Umney Theatre, Robinson College. A reception will follow the lecture.

Criminology. Commander Cressida Dick, of the Specialist Crime Directorate, New Scotland Yard, will give a public lecture in Seminar Room B3, Institute of Criminology Building (Sidgwick Site), on 17 February, entitled Challenges for the police in the post-Lawrence era.

Divinity and Oriental Studies. Professor André Lemaire, of the Institut d'Etudes Sémitiques, Collège de France, Paris, will give the second annual Tyrwhitt Lecture, entitled Hebrew and Aramaic inscriptions and the Old Testament, at an open meeting of the Old Testament Seminar on 23 February, at 2.30 p.m. in the Runcie Room, Faculty of Divinity, West Road.

Education. An Education and Psychology Seminar will be held on 8 March at 4.30 p.m. in the new Faculty Building, 184 Hills Road. Dr Bruno De Cara, of the University of Nice Sophia-Antipolis, will speak on Lexical representations and the emergence of rime processing across languages. A Mathematics Education Colloquium will be held at 5.30 p.m. on 28 February, in Room 205, Mary Allan Building, Hills Road. Professor Frode Rønning, Sør-Trøndelag, University College, Trondheim, Norway, will speak on Observing and analysing children's language when working with geometrical objects. 21 February Can proficiency be compared across languages? The ALTE Can Do Project, by Dr Neil Jones, of the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate.
8 March 'I can't get angry in Spanish': the acquisition of emotional speech in foreign languages, by Dr Jean-Marc Dewaele, of Birbeck College.

Engineering. Mechanics Colloquia will be held at 2.30 p.m. on Fridays in Lecture Room 6, Department of Engineering, Trumpington Street.

18 February New methods for the vibration analysis of systems with uncertain properties, by Professor Robin Langley, of the Department of Engineering.
25 February On the analysis of periodic structures, using finite difference calculus, by Mr John Renton, of St John's College.

Theoretical Geophysics. The Departments of Earth Sciences and Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics present a series of seminars on Theoretical Geophysics, which will take place at 2.05 p.m. on Thursdays in Room MR15, Centre for Mathematical Sciences, Wilberforce Road. A varied, informal luncheon will be supplied in the Common Room of Pavilion H before each seminar at a cost of £2.50 per person, commencing at 1.05 p.m.
