THE GERMAN CAMBRIDGE SOCIETY BURSARY

The German Cambridge Society has received from one of its members (who wishes to be anonymous) a donation of 7,500 euros for a bursary to enable a Cambridge student to spend a period in Germany.

It is open to graduate students or undergraduates but is probably most likely to be of interest to graduate students. The donor suggests that the bursary would be particularly appropriate for a student already planning to go to Germany in the academical year 2004-05, to enable him/her to spend longer there.

Those who wish to be considered should be able to show that they have a convincing plan of work to carry out in Germany. The donor's intention is 'to facilitate an opportunity for someone to combine his/her academic interests with an experience of life and work in Germany that goes beyond the short-term course or summer school type of event.'

Applicants should be able to offer a plan of what research or study will be undertaken; a good academic record and recommendation from the University or College; acceptance (in case of formal affiliation) or welcome by the institution(s) in Germany with which the candidate wishes to collaborate; presence in Germany for as much time as possible - two or three months at least, preferably longer; open personality and willingness to experience Germany beyond academic work.

Any subject will be acceptable but the donor comments: 'As I consider practical experience of Germany as a matter of course for modern linguists taking German, I'd favour other subjects - any other subject being equally welcome.'

Those wishing to be considered should send to the Cambridge Society, which is acting for the German Cambridge Society, a letter of application, setting out their plan of study or research, and giving details of where they propose to undertake it, together with a curriculum vitae and the name(s) of at least one academic referee - for a research student, normally the supervisor - to the Administrator, The Cambridge Society, 32 Trumpington Street, Cambridge, CB2 1QY (e-mail cls36@cam.ac.uk). Applications should be received by 29 March.
