Graces submitted to the Regent House on 17 November 2004

The Council submit the following Graces to the Regent House. These Graces, other than any which is withdrawn or for which a ballot is requested in accordance with the regulations for Graces of the Regent House (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 105), will be deemed to have been approved at 4 p.m. on Friday, 26 November 2004.

1. That a Foster Prize Fund be established in the University to be governed by the following regulations:1

Foster Prize Fund

1. The sum of £6,570 given to the University by an anonymous donor, shall form a fund to be called the Foster Prize Fund, which shall be used for the award of two prizes annually to the persons who are judged to have given the best lectures to the Foster Club or successor organization in an academical year. One prize will be awarded for the best lecture given in the Michaelmas Term, and one for the best lecture given in the Lent Term.

2. The Prize shall be awarded by the Head of the Department of Physiology on the recommendation of the Graduate Students and research and academic staff within the Department, provided that there is a lecture of sufficient merit.

3. Any Graduate Student or postdoctoral Research Assistant or postdoctoral Research Associate in the Department shall be eligible for the Prize, provided that no previous winner may again be eligible as a candidate.

4. The value of the Prizes shall be £250 or such larger sum as shall be determined by the Head of the Department within a range approved from time to time by the Council.

5. The capital and the income of the Fund shall be applied to the award of the Prize.

2. That the recommendations in paragraph 8 of the Report of the Faculty Board of Biology, dated 28 June 2004, on the abolition of Part II of the Medical and Veterinary Sciences Tripos (Reporter, 2003-04, p. 53) be approved.

3. That the recommendations in paragraph 13 of the Report of the Strategic Committee for the Natural Sciences Tripos, dated 14 September 2004, on the abolition of Part II (General) and revision of Part II of the Natural Sciences Tripos (Reporter, 2003-04, p. 54) be approved.

4. That the regulations for dates of examinations and publication of class-lists (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 204) be amended by attaching the following footnote to the entry for the Medical and Veterinary Sciences Tripos, Part IB in the table to Regulation 2:2

Except for the viva voce examination in Comparative Vertebrate Biology, which shall begin on the first day of Full Easter Term.

5. That, notwithstanding Grace 1 of 3 November 2004, the Management Studies Syndicate be discharged on 31 December 2004, and that until that date they discharge the functions assigned to them by the previous regulations for the Syndicate and other applicable regulations, mutatis mutandis in respect of the Faculty of Business and Management.3

6. That, notwithstanding the provisions of the general regulations for the constitution of the Faculty Boards,

(a)the Council be authorized to appoint two persons to serve from 1 January 2005 as members of the Faculty Board of Business and Management in class (b), one to serve until 31 December 2005 and one until 31 December 2006;
(b)ten persons be elected to serve from 1 January 2005 as members of the Faculty Board of Business and Management in class (c), three to serve until 31 December 2005, three until 31 December 2006, two until 31 December 2007, and two until 31 December 2008, the electors in that election being the persons eligible to vote for members in class (i) of the Management Studies Syndicate.

3 This Grace makes transitional provision to provide for the Management Studies Syndicate to continue to function until 31 December 2004, by which date the Faculty Board of Business and Management, which was established with effect from 1 October 2004 will be fully operational.
