Grades, salaries, and wages of University assistants: Notice

1. The negotiations between the Universities and Colleges Employers Association (UCEA) and the trades unions have resulted in a two-year pay award. In the first year, with effect from 1 August 2003, there was to be an increase to salaries of 3.44% or £550, whichever was the greater, and in the second year, to take effect from 1 August 2004, an increase on 2003-04 pay rates of 3%.

2. The two-year pay award is linked by the UCEA to acceptance by the trades unions nationally of a framework agreement. This framework agreement is intended to facilitate the modernization of pay arrangements in the sector (including supporting the achievement of equal pay for work of equal value) through the introduction of grading methods and new pay structures into institutions. Institutions are expected to complete the implementation of these new arrangements by 1 August 2006.

3. Following acceptance of the offer by the trades unions representing support staff, the Council agreed that the year one award should be paid to the University's assistant staff and the increase in salary was implemented in December 2003. The year two award of 3% will be paid in August 2004.

4. The Council publish below revised salary scales for Divisions CS, M, and T with effect from 1 August 2003. These replace the scales published in Reporter, 2002-03, pp. 511-13. A further revision will apply with effect from 1 August 2004; these new scales are also given below.
