Report of the General Board on the establishment of a Herchel Smith Professorship of Molecular Genetics: Notice

3 May 2004

The Council have received the remarks made by Professor G. R. Evans at the Discussion of this Report on 27 April 2004 (see p. 662). Her remarks relate to the assignment of a Professorship and to interdisciplinarity. Under Statute D, XV, 5, the General Board can determine that the assignment of a Professorship to a Department or other institution be deferred until after an election. In this case, the Report made it clear that this would be desirable to take account of the research interests of the person elected.

The recently approved revision of Statute D, XIV, 7 took account of interdisciplinary interests by specifying that the duties of a particular Professorship may concern more than one institution, as determined by the General Board. As the General Board state in their Report, the Herchel Smith Professorship of Molecular Genetics will provide scientific leadership within the interdisciplinary Centre for Stem Cell Biology and Medicine.

The Council are submitting a Grace to the Regent House (Grace 2, p. 657) for the approval of the recommendations contained in the Report.
