The Electors invite applications for the above Studentships, all tenable from 1 October 2004.
The maximum value of each Studentship would be the cost of approved University and College fees, a maintenance grant of at least £8,000, and an annual book grant of up to £350. Financial assistance may also be given towards the costs of fieldwork, attendance at conferences, and other essential academic expenses.
The competition is open to members of King's College, to prospective graduate students who have a B.A. or an M.A. Degree from another Cambridge College who wish to apply to King's for their graduate studies, unless they have begun graduate work at a College other than King's, and to new applications from graduates of universities in the United Kingdom and abroad.
It is the intention of the Electors to offer these Studentships to prospective applicants for one-year graduate qualifications offered by the University only where those applicants intend to register thereafter as candidates for the Ph.D. Degree. These degrees are the Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.), which some Departments of the University consider necessary before registration for the Ph.D. Degree; the Certificate of Advanced Study in Mathematics (Part III of the Mathematical Tripos); and the Master of Law (LL.M.).
These Studentships are tenable for the normal minimum of the degree subject to satisfactory academic progress. In the case of those applicants who propose to register for one-year graduate qualifications before the Ph.D. Degree, each Studentship is renewable for three years subject to satisfactory academic progress; in the case of the Certificate of Advanced Study in Mathematics renewal is also conditional on the award of a distinction.
All applicants must apply in the usual way to the University of Cambridge through its Board of Graduate Studies (please see http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/offices/gradstud/). It is important to note that only applicants conditionally offered a place by the Board can be offered a College place.
In addition, applicants for the King's Studentships must complete an application form, submit a detailed research proposal, nominate two academic referees, and be prepared to submit to the Electors to Studentships samples of written work. These applications should be addressed to the Tutor for Graduate Studies, King's College, Cambridge, CB2 1ST.
Applicants will be required also to apply for all other research awards for which they are eligible. In particular, applicants from overseas are directed to apply for Overseas Research Student Awards. The value of any Scholarship awarded will be reduced appropriately to take account of payments from other sources. Election to the Studentships will be conditional upon admission to the University by the Board of Graduate Studies.
All eligible applicants who by 15 May 2004 have been made a conditional offer of a College place by King's College will be considered. It is the responsibility of all applicants to ensure that their referees' reports are sent directly to the College by the closing date for applications. The closing date for receipt of application forms and referees' reports for the King's Studentships is 15 May 2004.
