Report of the General Board on the establishment of a Professorship of Cosmology and Astrophysics: Notice

15 March 2004

The Council have received the remarks made at the Discussion of this Report on 27 January 2004 (Reporter, p. 439) and have referred them to the General Board who have agreed to comment as follows on the remarks that are relevant to the Report.

Professor G. R. Evans questions the consistency of the proposal to establish a Professorship for Professor Sir Martin Rees, from the date he took up the Mastership of Trinity College and the cessation of his Royal Society Research Professorship, with the current arrangements for establishing Professorships. The establishment of the Professorship has been proposed in accordance with the provisions of Statute D, XIV, 3 and D, XV, 1(b). The General Board do not consider it necessary to comment further on Professor Rees's academic standing, or the grounds for the proposal which were clearly stated in the Report.

The Council have agreed to submit a Grace for the approval of the recommendation contained in this Report (Grace 2, p. 563).
