The GENERAL BOARD beg leave to report to the University as follows:

1. In their Report on certain fixed-term Professorships and Readerships and future arrangements for awarding the title of Honorary Professor or Reader (Reporter, 2000-01, p. 814), the Board proposed the establishment of a number of fixed-term Professorships and one Readership for certain persons for periods coterminous with the period for which funding was available in each case. The Board proposed inter alia the establishment of a Professorship of Photonics in the Department of Engineering for Professor W. A. Crossland for the period from 1 October 2001 to 31 December 2003. The recommendations of the Report were approved by Grace 8 of 25 July 2001.

2. The General Board now propose that this Professorship of Photonics be re-established for Professor Crossland from 1 January 2004 until 30 September 2006 when he will reach the statutory date of retirement. The cost of the Professorship will be met from research grants available to the Department of Engineering and, in the event of any shortfall in the funds to support the Professorship, the costs will be met from funds available to the Head of the Department of Engineering.

3. The General Board recommend:

That the Professorship of Photonics established by Grace 8 of 25 July 2001 be re-established from 1 January 2004 until 30 September 2006, for Professor W. A. Crossland, placed in Schedule B of the Statutes, and assigned to the Department of Engineering.
