UNIVERSITY LECTURERS

Appointments made at University Lecturer level will be for an initial period of three or five years, with reappointment thereafter subject to satisfactory performance. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer is £23,296 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £35,950.

University Lectureships in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP)

Applications are invited for two University Lectureships in Theoretical High Energy Physics. The successful candidates will be expected to take up appointment on 1 January 2004 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Candidates should have an outstanding record of research in an area overlapping the research interests of members of the High Energy Physics group in DAMTP. The main activities of the group are currently in classical and quantum field theory and in string theory, and in their application to elementary particle physics, astroparticle physics, and cosmology, and some aspects of statistical physics.

University Lecturer in the Department of Public Health and Primary Care

An outstanding epidemiologist or statistician is invited to join, at a senior level, one of Europe's premiere university departments of population sciences.

The post-holder will help establish programmes of research that are consistent with the Department's overall strategy, particularly in relation to genetic epidemiology and/or cancer epidemiology. They will also contribute to the organization, delivery, and assessment of teaching in the Department, including responsibility for the academic direction of one particular teaching programme.

Deputy Director of the University Computing Service

The University is seeking a person who has a good technical understanding of a wide spectrum of IT issues and who is capable of engaging with the expert staff of the Computing Service, University Departments, and Colleges, in strategic planning for the development of present and future academic IT services. This is very much a hands-on role as the Deputy Director will be a leading player in the Senior Management Team and will be able to deputize for the Director in all aspects of the business of the Computing Service. To fulfil this task the post-holder must have, in addition to a good technical background, an understanding of the costing of services and the ability to produce rigorous and clear arguments both orally and in writing. Previous experience of delivering IT services to end-users is required.

The University Computing Service provides a gigabit network linking Departments and Colleges which now supports more than 30,000 computers, a centrally managed workstation, shared file-store facility with more than 10,000 active users, and a central e-mail service with 20,000 users. It is also responsible for central Web services, archiving, security investigation and response, hardware engineering services, Windows and Unix advice, consultancy, support and training, and the management, planning, and liaison activities necessary for the running of this large Department which has over 100 staff and an annual budget of £6m.

This is a permanent appointment which arises from the retirement of the present Deputy Director and carries a salary of £49,685. Interviews will be held in Cambridge on 8 or 9 September.

Administrative Officer, Grade II, in the University Offices with duties in the Faculty of Clinical Medicine

Applications are invited for the post of Administrative Officer, Grade II (Assessment and Examinations Officer) in the University Offices with duties in the Faculty of Clinical Medicine to take up appointment as soon as possible. The post-holder will undertake responsibilities relating to the assessment of Clinical Students including the development of a new Final M.B. Examination.

The pensionable scale of stipends for an Administrative Officer, Grade II, is £21,125 rising by six increments to £27,339 a year. The appointment will be to the retiring age, subject to satisfactory completion of a probationary period of nine months. Applicants should have at least three years of administrative experience preferably in a University or medical environment, and degree-level education or equivalent. Knowledge or interest in relevant educational theory would be highly desirable.

Faculty Librarian, Grade B, in the Faculty of Music

Applications are invited for the post of Librarian, Grade B, in the Faculty of Music. The Librarian is responsible for all reader services, book selection and collection development, administration and forward planning, the appointment of library assistant staff, and the management of the Library's budget.

Candidates should have a good honours degree and a postgraduate qualification in Librarianship and Information Studies, together with experience of academic librarianship. A background in music, though not essential, is highly desirable. The successful candidate will be expected to have substantial experience of integrated library management systems.

The appointment will be to the retiring age, subject to satisfactory completion of a probationary period of nine months. The pensionable scale of stipends for a Librarian, Grade B, is £20,311 a year, rising by seven annual increments to £27,339.

The Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics has the following vacancies. The Department would welcome applications from candidates for either post as a 50% position and from candidates who would wish to combine the two positions into a full-time post.

Deputy Administrator (50% FTE)

Applications are invited for the half-time post of Deputy Administrator to take up appointment as soon as possible.

The post-holder will manage a range of administrative duties including personnel administration, committee servicing, and ad hoc projects. Applicants (graduate level or equivalent) should be articulate, able to work on their own initiative, quick-to-learn, have good time-management capability, and have an enthusiastic and flexible approach to work. eScience Administrator (50% FTE)

Applications are invited for the half-time post of eScience Administrator to take up appointment as soon as possible.

The post-holder will manage the Cambridge eScience Centre. The duties will include financial administration, personnel administration, committee servicing, and liaison with the Department of Trade and Industry, EPSRC, and NERC. Applicants (graduate level or equivalent) should be articulate, be able to work on their own initiative, be quick to learn, have good time-management capability, and have an enthusiastic and flexible approach to work. Development Officer (Maternity Leave Cover) in the Botanic Garden

Applications are invited for the post of Development Officer to cover the absence of the post-holder on maternity leave from September 2003.

The successful candidate, responsible to the Director, will be required to further the fund-raising strategy of the Botanic Garden and to advance the project for the new £16m Education Centre. Appointment will be for six months. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will have demonstrable expertise in the field of fund-raising. Salary will be on a scale of £21,125 to £27,339 pro rata.

Administrator in the Centre for Research in the Arts, Social Sciences, and Humanities

The University wishes to appoint an Administrator for the Centre to assist the Director, Deputy Director, and Management Committee in implementing the strategic operating plan and in contributing to the planning and management of the Centre's academic and fund-raising programme. The duties require the ability to exercise autonomy and authority, particularly in areas of personnel, finance, and building management, while working under the general direction of the Director. The post-holder will have contact with a wide range of people both within and outside the University. Good interpersonal skills are therefore essential.

The appointment will be from 1 October (or as soon as possible thereafter) to 30 September 2006. The pensionable scale of stipends will be £21,125 a year, rising by six annual increments to £27,339.
