Oriental Studies Tripos (Indian Studies)

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 384)

The regulations have been amended (i) to retitle the subject Indian Studies as South Asian Studies in order to reflect the broader area now covered by the course, (ii) to reduce the load on candidates for Part II in this subject by reducing by one the number of papers required, (iii) to reorder and change the names of certain papers, and (iv) to include a new paper from October 2004.

With effect from 1 October 2003

Regulations 3(a)(iii), 11(a), 14 (Schedule IA), 15 (Schedule IIA), 16 (Schedule IIF).

By changing 'Indian Studies' to 'South Asian Studies' at each occurrence and relabelling In. papers as Sa. papers.

Regulation 11(a).

By amending Papers In. 19, and 21-25 so as to read:

Sa. 19. Selected readings in a North Indian language.
Sa. 21. Special subject in South Asian history.
Sa. 22. The Mughal Empire.
Sa. 23. Women and literature in India.
Sa. 24. Special subject in South Asian religion and philosophy.
Sa. 25. Special subject in South Asian literature.

Regulation 15, Schedule IIA, (Whole subjects).

By amending the regulation for Option (6) so as to read:

(6) South Asian Studies

 Either (i) Sanskrit and South Asian Studies
 (a) six papers chosen from Sa. 11-29;
(b) a dissertation;
provided that:
(1) not more than two papers shall be chosen from Sa. 16-20;
(2) a candidate who offers any of Sa. 16-18 shall also offer the Hindi oral;
(3) a candidate who offers Sa. 28 shall also offer Sa. 29 and vice versa.
 or (ii) Hindi and South Asian Studies
(a) six papers chosen from Sa. 11-29, including at least three papers chosen from Sa. 16-20;
(b) a dissertation;
(c) Hindi oral;
provided that a candidate who offers Sa. 28 shall also offer Sa. 29 and vice versa.

Regulation 16, Schedule IIF (Whole subjects):

By amending the regulation for Option (3) so as to read:

(3) South Asian Studies
 Five papers chosen from Sa. 11-29; provided that:
 (1) not more than two papers shall be chosen from Sa. 21-29;
 (2) a candidate who offers any of Sa. 16-18 shall also offer the Hindi oral;
 (3) a candidate who offers Sa. 28 shall also offer Sa. 29 and vice versa.

With effect from 1 October 2004

Regulation 11(a).

By adding a new paper, Sa. 9, so as to read:

Sa. 9. Society, politics, and media in South Asia.

SUPPLEMENTARY REGULATIONS

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 396)

The following supplementary regulations for Paper Sa. 9 take effect from 1 October 2004:

Sa. 9. Society, politics, and media in South Asia.

The course will consist of lectures and seminars, in which students will be expected to give presentations. The course comprises a significant film element; copies of the films will be available with the teaching officers for students to watch at home in their own time. Apart from presentations, students will be expected to write at least two essays per term.
