St Edmund's College

SCIENCE COMMUNICATION WORKSHOP

Applications are invited for a four-week course in science journalism during the Michaelmas Term. The course will be taught by Richard Stone, European News Editor at the journal Science and Visiting Writer in Science at St Edmund's College.

The course will be conducted in a workshop format. Lectures will cover topics such as journalistic practice and ethics, including examinations of the sources of science news, the embargo system, and how to interview scientists and policymakers. The main aims of the course are twofold: cultivating an appreciation of the craft of science journalism through analyses of premier examples of science writing, and developing the participants' own skills through writing assignments and critiques.

The course will be held on four consecutive Thursday evenings: 16 October, 23 October, 30 October, and 6 November, from 7.30 p.m. to 9.30 p.m. in the Okinaga Room at St Edmund's College. A £25 fee will cover the cost of course materials and refreshments. Due to the workshop format, enrolment is limited to ten participants. To apply, members of the University should send a brief letter of interest by e-mail to Mr Richard Stone at rstone@science-int.co.uk or by post to St Edmund's College, Cambridge, CB3 0BN, by 30 September 2003.
