Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (Old and Revised Regulations)

(Statutes and Ordinances, pp. 514 and 521)

With effect from 1 October 2003

The purpose of the amendments is to incorporate changes to the content of and procedure for examinations for Parts II and III of the Final Vet.M.B. Examination. They incorporate the recommendations of External Examiners on the conduct of the examinations and the recommendation of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in its Report on the Visitation to the Department of Clinical Veterinary Medicine in November 2001 that Veterinary Public Health should be examined separately in Part III.

The Faculty Board of Clinical Veterinary Medicine have recommended that the new procedure should take effect from 1 October 2003 so that it applies to all those students who will be taking Parts II and III of the Final Vet.M.B. Examination in May 2004. The Faculty Board believe that the students will appreciate that there are longer-term professional benefits to be derived from the introduction of the four sections in the Part III examination (and in particular the introduction of an examination in Veterinary Public Health), and also from the requirement for a pass in all the discrete elements of the Part III examination. The students and their Directors of Studies have been notified of the proposed changes.

The regulations have been amended as follows:

Regulation 10 (Old Regulations) and Regulation 16 (Revised Regulations).

By amending the regulation so as to read:

Two sittings of Part II of the Final Veterinary Examination shall be held each year, beginning on the second Wednesday of Full Easter Term and on the Monday that next precedes the first day of the Michaelmas Term. The examination shall consist of two written papers, and a practical examination. Questions in the two written papers will cover the following areas:

1. Parasitic diseases

2. Biology of infectious disease

3. Basic clinical pharmacology, toxicology, and systems pathology

4. Animal health, animal breeding, and nutrition

Regulation 11 (Old Regulations) and Regulation 17 (Revised Regulations).

By amending the final sentence so as to read:

A candidate for Part II shall take both papers and the practical examination at the same sitting. Subject to the provisions of Regulation 14(b) and (c) (Old Regulations) [Regulation 20(b) and (c) (Revised Regulations)], candidates who fail to satisfy the Examiners may present themselves for re-examination, taking both papers and the practical examination at the same sitting.

Regulation 12 (Old Regulations) and Regulation 18 (Revised Regulations).

By amending the first five lines so as to read:

Part III of the Final Veterinary Examination shall be held twice a year beginning on the Friday that next precedes the last day of Full Easter Term and on the Monday next preceding the first day of the Michaelmas Term. Part III shall consist of four sections, each consisting of a written paper and a practical/oral examination:

1. Equine studies

2. Small animal studies

3. Farm animal studies

4. Veterinary public health

The written papers for sections 1 to 3 shall be of three hours' duration and for section 4 shall be of two hours' duration.

By replacing the final paragraph with the following:

A candidate attempting Part III for the first time shall be required to take a written paper in each of the four sections at the same sitting. The candidate will then, subject to attaining the required standard in each written paper, proceed to take a practical/oral examination for the section corresponding to each written paper. Any candidate who fails to attain the prescribed standard in the practical/oral examination for any section will be required to take a viva voce examination. Candidates who fail a written paper will be required to re-present themselves for re-examination, subject to the provisions of Regulation 14 (b) and (c) (Old Regulations) [Regulation 20(b) and (c) (Revised Regulations)].

SUPPLEMENTARY REGULATIONS
