Laundry Farm, Barton Road: Notice

10 March 2003

On the recommendation of the Finance Committee, the Council have approved the grant of a lease of 1.86 ha of land at Laundry Farm to the Cambridge and County Bowling Club. The Club are currently tenants of University land between the Botanic Garden and Brooklands Avenue. The new lease, which will be for a term of 50 years, will allow the Club to construct new indoor and outdoor facilities at Laundry Farm, thereby giving the University vacant possession of the Brooklands Avenue site. A proposal has been submitted to the Planning and Resources Committee by the Botanic Garden Syndicate for an Education and Interpretation Centre on this site. This proposal will be the subject of a Report to the University when more details are available.

The land at Laundry Farm is currently used by the University Farm, which does not object to the loss of the land. The location is shown on the plan accompanying this Notice below.

The detailed terms of the new lease are not yet finalized. The lease will be at a rent reflecting the site value for a non-commercial leisure use. It will exceed the agricultural rent paid by the University Farm for the Laundry Farm site, and will be broadly comparable to the Club's current rent at Brooklands Avenue. The Council believe that the Laundry Farm site has no immediate potential for more lucrative development, although in the long term it may have. The length of the lease will reflect this assessment, and also the needs of the Club in relation to their fundraising.
