Certificate of Postgraduate Study in History of Art and Examination in History of Art and Architecture for the M.Phil. Degree

The General Board and the Board of Graduate Studies have approved a proposal from the Faculty Board of Architecture and History of Art that the Certificate of Postgraduate Study in History of Art be suspended and replaced by a new examination in History of Art and Architecture for the M.Phil. Degree. The special regulations for the Certificate (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 547) have therefore been rescinded with effect from 1 October 2003. The following special regulations for the examination in History of Art and Architecture for the M.Phil. Degree have been approved with effect from the same date.

History of Art and Architecture

1. The scheme of examination for the one-year course of study in History of Art and Architecture for the degree of Master of Philosophy shall consist of:

(i) a thesis of not more than 15,000 words in length, including footnotes, and appendices, but excluding bibliography, on a subject approved by the Degree Committee for the Faculty of Architecture and History of Art;

and

(ii) two essays, each not exceeding 4,000 words in length on topics approved by the Degree Committee;

and

(iii) two presentations, each not exceeding 3,000 words in length, on topics approved by the Degree Committee falling within the following fields:

Architectural history
Text and image

2. The examination shall include an oral examination on the thesis and the essays submitted by the candidate and on the general field of knowledge within which they fall.
