Announcement of lectures, seminars, etc.

The following lectures, seminars, etc. will be open to members of the University and others who are interested:

Anglo-Saxon, Norse, and Celtic. Dr Carole Biggam, of the University of Glasgow, will give a lecture entitled The limits of understanding: semantic research into Anglo-Saxon plant-names, on Friday, 28 February, at 5 p.m. in the Rushmore Room, St Catharine's College.

Centre for Research in the Arts, Social Sciences, and Humanities (CRASSH). David Bell, of the British Psychoanalytical Society, will be giving the sixth lecture in the series entitled Certainty, uncertainty, and meaning, at 8 p.m. on Thursday, 27 February, in the Lloyd Room, Christ's College. His talk will be entitled 'I am the spirit that negates all': negation, the active principle of Thanatos.

A conference of the British Society for the History of Philosophy entitled Platonism at the origins of Modernity will be held from 27-29 March 2003 at Clare College. The conference (sponsored by the Mind Association, the French Embassy, and CRASSH) will examine the role of the Platonic tradition in the developments associated with the beginnings of modern philosophy. Criminology. Professor Hans-Jorg Albrecht, Director of the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law, Freiburg, will give a public lecture in Room G24, Faculty of Law, West Road, entitled Anti-terrorism legislation after 9/11, on Thursday, 6 March, at 5.30 p.m.

Engineering. The third lecture in the series on Sustainable development will take place on Wednesday, 5 March, at 6.30 p.m. for 7 p.m., in the Lecture Theatre and the Lubbock Room, Peterhouse. Professor David Fisk, of Imperial College London, will give a lecture entitled After the world summit. For further details please contact Dr R. A. University Library. Sandars Lectures 2003. Lectures under the title of Description, image, and reality: aspects of bookbinding history, will be delivered by Professor Mirjam Foot, Professor of Library and Archive Studies, of University College London, at 5 p.m. in the Morison Room, University Library, as follows:

Thursday, 27 March Image and reality.

Isaac Newton Institute. Professor Constantine Dafermos, of Brown University, will hold a seminar entitled Progress in hyperbolic conservation laws, on Monday, 10 March, at 5 p.m. in Seminar Room 1, Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences, 20 Clarkson Road. Tea will be served from 4.30 p.m. and there will be an informal reception afterwards. McDonald Institute. The seminar by Professor Colin Renfrew on From land art to landscape archaeology, originally scheduled for 19 February, will now take place on Wednesday, 5 March at 1.15 p.m. in the McDonald Institute Seminar Room, Downing Site.
