Vacancy in the University

The University is committed to equality of opportunity.

UNIVERSITY OFFICE

Applications are invited for the following University office:

Director of the Centre for Research in the Arts, Social Sciences, and Humanities

The University wishes to appoint a Director for the Centre for Research in the Arts, Social Sciences, and Humanities, to succeed the founding Director, Professor Ian Donaldson, FBA. The Centre was established in 2001 to stimulate and enhance interdisciplinary research within the University's two Schools of Arts and Humanities, and Humanities and Social Sciences, and to establish itself as a focus of interdisciplinary research both nationally and internationally. It is supervised by the General Board, and operates independently of any Faculty or Department, under the guidance of the Management Committee, to whom the Director is answerable.

The Director acts as the Head of the Centre, developing the Centre's programmes and activities, overseeing the day-to-day running of the Centre, and advising on long-term policy. Fundraising will form a significant part of the Director's role.

The Director must be a senior scholar of high academic standing, with a strong research record in one or more disciplines within the arts, humanities, or social sciences, and wide-ranging interdisciplinary interests. He/she will command strong people skills, ability in administration, knowledge of the UK Higher Education sector, and experience and ability in the key area of fundraising.

The appointment is for a period of three years. The stipend will be at professorial level with an additional pensionable payment for administrative responsibility of £3,726 a year. It is hoped that the successful candidate will take up the post on 1 October 2003 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Further particulars may be downloaded from the Centre's website at http://www.crassh.cam.ac.uk/director.html, or obtained from the Administrator, CRASSH, Old Press Site, Silver Street, Cambridge, CB3 9EW (tel. 01223 766886, e-mail administrator@crassh.cam.ac.uk).

Informal enquiries may be made to Professor Ian Donaldson (tel. 01223 365275, e-mail id202@cus.cam.ac.uk) or Professor Malcolm Schofield (tel. 01223 338644, e-mail m.schofield@joh.cam.ac.uk).

Applications, including a curriculum vitae, should be made to the Administrator at the above address by 14 March 2003. Candidates are requested to nominate three referees and ask them to write direct to the Administrator by the closing date.
