Director of Research in the Department of Engineering

Applications are invited for the post of Director of Research (Administration and Development) in the Department of Engineering to take up appointment as soon as possible.

The person appointed will be required to co-ordinate, administer, and develop the funding and housing of research activities throughout the Department. The duties will include fostering contacts with industry, Government, and grant-giving bodies. In addition, the person appointed will support the Head of Department in many areas of policy and development. It is expected that the appointee will have a good appreciation of research in engineering, a good first degree and preferably a Ph.D. Degree in a relevant discipline, and should possess excellent analytic, communication, and organizational skills.

Appointment will be to the retiring age, subject to the satisfactory completion of a probationary period. The pensionable stipend for the Director of Research is £41,386 a year.

University Lecturers and University Assistant Lecturers

Appointments made at University Lecturer level will be for an initial period of three or five years, with reappointment thereafter subject to satisfactory performance. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer is £23,296 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £35,950.

Appointments made at University Assistant Lecturer level will be for three years, with the possibility of reappointment for a further two years. The statutory limit of tenure of a University Assistant Lectureship is five years, but all holders of the office of University Assistant Lecturer are considered for possible appointment to the office of University Lecturer during the course of their tenure. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Assistant Lecturer is currently £21,125 a year, rising by six annual increments to £25,451.

University Lecturer in the Institute of Biotechnology

Applications are invited for a University Lectureship tenable in the Institute of Biotechnology to take up appointment as soon as possible. Candidates should be able to present evidence of research excellence and potential in any area of biotechnology that complements or extends the established multidisciplinary activities of the Institute. Experience in funding and managing an independent research group would be welcome. The post-holder will be expected to make contributions to teaching activities, which include post-graduate training, the newly established Master's course in Bioscience Enterprise, and undergraduate teaching, as appropriate. University Lecturer/University Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Italian

The Department of Italian intends to appoint a specialist in the field of Renaissance Italian literature at University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer grade. The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to the teaching of the literature, culture, and history of the period at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including the supervision of Ph.D. Degree students. He/she should also be qualified to participate in the teaching of the Italian language. The successful candidate would be expected to have an outstanding record of research and/or publication. The appointment will be from 1 October 2003 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Administrative Officer, Grade I, in the Academic Division of the University Offices (Department of Geography)

Administrative Officer in the Academic Division of the University Offices, to serve as Administrator of the Department of Geography, to take up appointment as soon as possible.

Candidates should be educated to degree level and have previous relevant experience in an administrative post, with proven ability in managing resources and staff, preferably gained in a higher education establishment.

The pensionable scale of stipends for an Administrative Officer, Grade I, is £25,451 to £30,660 a year. Appointment will be subject to the satisfactory completion of a probationary period.

Administrative Officer, Grade II, in the Finance Division of the University Offices

The University is developing an ambitious programme of improvement to its financial processes and procedures and is now seeking to appoint an enthusiastic Deputy Manager to establish best practice at the level of Administrative Officer, Grade II. The post-holder will provide high quality technical advice to departmental staff and will deputize for the Section Head.

The post-holder will need to have significant financial experience, ideally within Transaction Processing (AP, AR, banking), and will have experience of staff management and of financial systems. Candidates must be educated to A level or equivalent, must possess good technical knowledge of financial systems and processes, and must have the ability to devise solutions to problems and lead projects.

The pensionable scale of stipends for an Administrative Officer, Grade II, is £21,125 to £27,339 a year. Appointment will be to the retiring age, subject to the satisfactory completion of a probationary period.

Senior Technical Officer in the School of Clinical Medicine

Applications are invited for the post of Senior Technical Officer (School Safety Officer). The post is available immediately. The post has been created in the School to enhance and develop the management of all aspects of safety in the School. The School Safety Officer will support the Heads of Department and those designated as equivalent for this purpose, these being responsible to the University for health and safety in their Departments. He/she will work closely with the departmental safety officer and/or departmental administrator, and NHS managers, and will advise, support, and guide departmental staff on all aspects of safety.

The post-holder will provide practical assistance to facilitate standardized practices (e.g., risk assessment), dissemination of good practice, and will manage the on-going development of the Clinical School Health and Safety Manual, and generally provide added value to the School's Departments in the management of health and safety. The work will involve close liaison with NHS and other partners. The person appointed will have a relevant first degree, a safety qualification, and membership of a professional health and safety organization.

The pensionable scale of stipends for a Senior Technical Officer is £23,296 to £33,679 a year. Appointment will be to the retiring age, subject to the satisfactory completion of a probationary period.
