Clinical Lecturer/Specialist Registrar in the Department of Pathology

Applications are invited for the post of Clinical Lecturer in Virology, which is available immediately. This post provides an opportunity to develop research projects, complete professional training in Virology, engage in clinical duties, and participate in a variety of teaching programmes in the ambience of a major teaching hospital. Whilst candidates who have completed the degree of Ph.D. are welcome, there is opportunity for candidates earlier in their careers to embark on Ph.D. Degree studies. The stipend is on the Clinical Lecturer/Specialist Registrar scale of £25,920 to £44,810 a year.

Applicants are expected to have completed a minimum of two years' general professional training in approved posts and MRCP (UK) or an equivalent qualification is highly desirable. The appointment will be for four years initially (renewable after review for a further two years) and carries a national training number. The successful candidate will be based in the Virology section of the Clinical Microbiology and Public Health Laboratory at Addenbrooke's Hospital and will be a member of the Virology Division of the Department of Pathology. There are attractive opportunities for clinical as well as more basic aspects of virology research.

University Lecturers and University Assistant Lecturers

Appointments made at University Lecturer level will be for an initial period of three or five years, with reappointment thereafter subject to satisfactory performance. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer is currently £22,522 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £34,734.

Appointments made at University Assistant Lecturer level will be for three years, with the possibility of reappointment for a further two years. The statutory limit of tenure of a University Assistant Lectureship is five years, but all holders of the office of University Assistant Lecturer are considered for possible appointment to the office of University Lecturer during the course of their tenure. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Assistant Lecturer is currently £19,681 a year, rising by six annual increments to £24,435.

University Lecturer in the Department of Earth Sciences

Applications are invited for a University Lecturer in Mathematical Geosciences who will be a member of the Institute of Theoretical Geophysics which is a flourishing joint research group of the Departments of Earth Sciences and Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics. The Department invites applications from mathematicians and earth scientists whose research is in any area of the application of mathematics and physics to understanding the earth. Examples of possible areas include seismology, fluid mechanics, tectonics, geomagnetism, and climate modelling. This list is not exclusive, the Department is seeking outstanding mathematically oriented scientists who are interested in any aspect of the Earth Sciences.

University Lecturer in the Faculty of History

Applications are invited for this post which will become vacant on the retirement of Professor D. A. Brading. The post-holder would be responsible for teaching a course in Part II of the Historical Tripos on a subject in Latin American History since 1492 to be approved by the Faculty Board, and for supervising graduate students in this field. The post-holder would also be expected to participate in the teaching of Part I papers on the Expansion of Europe from the fifteenth century to the First World War and/or the West and the Third World since 1918. Appointment will be from 1 October 2003 or as soon as possible thereafter.

University Lecturer/University Assistant Lecturer in the Faculty of Law

The Faculty is seeking an appropriately qualified individual to teach Public International Law at undergraduate and postgraduate level, to conduct and supervise research in the field of Public International Law, and to participate in the general work of the Faculty. Computer Officer, Grade II, in the University Computing Service

Computer Officer, Grade II (Senior Unix System Administrator), to take up appointment in the University Computing Service. The post-holder would be working in Systems and Unix Division which is responsible for most services that are Unix-based. The work is challenging and requires familiarity and experience in Unix system administration in a networked environment, especially involving Solaris 2 and Linux.

The post-holder must have system administration experience, preferably involving more than one flavour of Unix and more than one machine. Experience of securing machines on the Internet not behind a firewall would be an advantage. The pensionable scale of stipends for a Computer Officer, Grade II, is £28,498 to £30,660 a year.

Lecturer in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science

The Department intends to appoint a Lecturer in the History of Modern Science; those with interests in the history of twentieth-century science are especially encouraged to apply. The post is unestablished and the appointment will be for three years while Professor James Secord holds a Leverhulme Major Research Fellowship. It is hoped that the successful applicant will take up the appointment on 1 October 2003. The scale of stipends for this post is £23,296 to £24,121 a year depending on age and experience.

Temporary Assistant Lecturer in the Faculty of History

Applications are invited for this post, which will be for two years as a temporary replacement for Dr R. H. Drayton. The post-holder would be required to give 24 lectures or classes a year in the field of British Empire and Commonwealth History since 1780 for a third-year paper in that subject and for second-year papers on the Expansion of Europe from the fifteenth century to the First World War and/or the West and the Third World since 1918, the precise topics to be agreed in the light of the applicant's experience and interests. The successful candidate would also be required to supervise undergraduates for these papers, to supervise M.Phil. students in this field, and to undertake appropriate examining duties.

Appointment will be from 1 October 2003 or as soon as possible thereafter. The salary will be £21,125 a year. There is no application form.
