Land Economy Tripos, 2003

The Board of Land Economy give notice that, with effect from the examinations to be held in 2003, the form of the examinations for Parts IA, IB, and II of the Land Economy Tripos will be changed as follows:

Group I

Paper 1. Economics

Paper 1 will be examined through a three-hour unseen written paper. Candidates will be required to answer four questions, at least one from each section, plus one from any section.

Paper 3. Accounting and data evaluation

The assessment of Paper 3 will comprise a three-hour unseen paper (70% of the final mark for Paper 3), an accounting project (10% of the final mark for Paper 3), and a take home statistical project (20% of the final mark for Paper 3). The written paper is divided into two sections: Data Evaluation (47% of the final mark for Paper 3) and Accounting (23% of the final mark for Paper 3). In the written paper candidates will be required to answer five questions, four from six in Section A and one from two in Section B. Candidates will be provided with a list of essential statistical formulae in the examination room.

Paper 4. Land, environment, and structural change

The assessment of Paper 4 will comprise a two-hour unseen written paper (75% of the final mark for Paper 4), a group project leading to an oral presentation (5% of the total mark for Paper 4), and a take-home project (20% of the final mark for Paper 4). The written paper will contain no fewer than five questions of which candidates will be required to answer two.

Group III

Paper 9. Private law

This paper will contain ten questions, of which candidates will be required to attempt four.

Candidates will be permitted to use their own copies of Blackstone's Statutes of Contract and Tort (any edition) or Blackstone's Statutes on Contract, Tort and Restitution (any edition).

Group IV

Paper 11. Land and urban economics

The paper will contain eight questions, from which candidates will be required to answer three. The paper will contain two sections, Section A, Housing and Section B, Urban Economics. There will be three questions in Section A and candidates will be required to answer one. There will be five questions in Section B and candidates will be required to answer two.

Group V

Paper 13. Landlord and tenant law

The paper will be divided into two sections. Section A will contain four questions on the common law of leases and of the rights and obligations of the parties to leases. Section B will contain four questions on the statutory regulation of residential, business, and agricultural tenancies. Candidates will be required to attempt four questions, two from each section.

Candidates will be permitted to use their own copies of:

(1) Butterworth's Landlord and Tenant Handbook (any edition and in one or two volumes); or Blackstone's Statutes on Landlord and Tenant (any edition);
and
(2) Sweet and Maxwell's Property Law Statutes (any edition) or Blackstone's Property Law Statutes (any edition);
and
(3) their own copies or photocopies of the Agricultural Holdings Act 1986 and the Agricultural Tenancies Act 1995
