Applications are invited for the following University offices:

Assistant Registrary in the Academic Division

Assistant Registrary in the Planning and Resource Allocation Office, to take up appointment on 1 January 2003, or as soon as possible thereafter. The person appointed will support the work of the central committees responsible for the allocation of resources across the University. In particular, he/she will be expected to play a major role in the development of resource allocation mechanisms and contribute, more generally, to policy developments and projects. Applicants should be educated to degree level and have substantial relevant experience within Higher Education or a related field.

The appointment will be made for an initial period of three years, unless that requirement is waived by the Council, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age subject to satisfactory performance. The pensionable scale of stipends for an Assistant Registrary is currently £22,522 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £34,374 (pay award pending).

Departmental Secretary, Grade C, in the Department of Chemical Engineering (Resources Manager)

The Departmental Secretary will be responsible to the Head of Department, will act as a Manager, and will have a wide-ranging management role in several key areas, such as assistant staff, personnel and management issues, buildings, services, finance, and providing support for the research and teaching of a busy organization. The Secretary will assist the Head of Department and the academic staff to develop and implement a Forward Plan for the Department's resources to facilitate the achievement of the highest quality in teaching and research.

The Secretary of the Department must be able to interpret, adapt, and implement detailed and often complex policies and procedures, and communicate them effectively to staff at all levels in the Department.

The pensionable scale of stipends for a Departmental Secretary, Grade C, is currently £21,503 to £26,491 a year. Appointment will be for three years in the first instance, with the possibility of reappointment for periods not exceeding five years at a time, subject to satisfactory performance. A post-holder who has reached the maximum of the scale of stipends may be reappointed to the retiring age. Those appointed to the Secretaryship of a Department should normally be educated to degree level. The closing date for applications is 11 December 2002.

Research Facilitator in the Department of Chemical Engineering

The Department of Chemical Engineering wishes to appoint a Research Facilitator who will promote and enhance research and improve the Department's success in its research activities. The Research Facilitator will provide professional, high-level research support to all members of staff within the Department and will promote the Department's external research profile. He/she will also primarily foster, develop, and exploit research activity in chemical engineering and will also be expected to provide advice and assistance to academic colleagues preparing individual research grant applications and recruiting research workers.

The successful candidate will already have a record of success in these areas. Good administrative, interpersonal, team-working, and IT skills, together with an in-depth knowledge of technical issues will be essential, as will the ability to initiate new ideas and motivate others.

The salary for this post is on a current scale of £22,522 to £32,537 a year. The post is fixed term and will be for five years.
