The National Maritime Museum aims to promote the understanding of the history and future of Britain and the sea by preserving, interpreting and developing its collections, premises, and expertise.

CAIRD SENIOR RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS

The Caird Senior Research Fellowships are offered annually by the Trustees of the Museum and are intended to encourage high-quality research on the Museum's collections or in the field of British naval and maritime history. Fellows may also be appointed to study the history of navigational sciences (astronomy, navigation, hydrography, cartography), maritime art, literature, or film.

The Fellowships are primarily intended to support study at a postdoctoral level and applications are encouraged from scholars of any nationality who have recently submitted a Ph.D. Degree or expect to do so before the commencement of the Fellowship.

The conditions for the Fellowship are:

(b) any publication arising from the tenure of the Fellowship would receive printed acknowledgement in the publication.

A Fellow may be expected to attend conferences or symposia on behalf of the Museum and to participate in informal seminars with staff, he or she will also be expected to report regularly on research progress.

The next available Fellowship will be tenable from October 2003.

CAIRD SHORT-TERM RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP

The extensive collections of the National Maritime Museum have an international reputation and are particularly rich in British naval and maritime history between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries. The National Maritime Museum encourages applications from individuals whose research proposals share the Museum's aims to provide new and exciting ways of interpreting the collections and their historical contexts.

The conditions for the Fellowship are:
