Examination in Modern European History for the M.Phil. Degree (one-year course)

With effect from 1 October 2002

On the recommendation of the Faculty Board of History, the General Board and the Board of Graduate Studies have approved Modern European History as a subject for postgraduate study for the M.Phil. Degree. Special regulations for the examination in that subject have been approved as follows:

Modern European History

1. The scheme of examination for the one-year course of study in Modern European History for the degree of Master of Philosophy shall consist of:

(a) a thesis of not less than 20,000 words and not more than 25,000 words in length, including notes and appendices, but excluding bibliography, on a topic approved by the Degree Committee for the Faculty of History;
(b) two essays, each of not more than 5,000 words in length, on topics chosen by the candidate from a list of topics specified by the Degree Committee and falling within the following fields, one topic being chosen from each field:

    (i) History and historians.
    (ii) Concepts in modern European history.

(c) one essay, of not more than 5,000 words in length, on a topic chosen from a list of options announced by the Degree Committee;
(d) A critical report of not more than 2,500 words in length on a seminar and a workshop held during the course.

2. At the discretion of the Examiners the examination may include an oral examination on the thesis and on the general field of knowledge within which it falls.
