University Lecturers and University Assistant Lecturers

Appointments made at University Lecturer level will be for an initial period of three or five years, with reappointment thereafter subject to satisfactory performance. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer is currently £22,522 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £34,734.

Appointments made at University Assistant Lecturer level will be for three years, with the possibility of reappointment for a further two years. The statutory limit of tenure of a University Assistant Lectureship is five years, but all holders of the office of University Assistant Lecturer are considered for possible appointment to the office of University Lecturer during the course of their tenure. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Assistant Lecturer is currently £19,681 a year, rising by six annual increments to £24,435.

University Lecturer in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science

University Lecturer in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science required to take up appointment on 1 October 2003. The Department encourages applicants in any field of History and Philosophy of Science, excluding History of Medicine.

The initial appointment will be for three years and reappointment will then be to the retirement age, subject to satisfactory performance.

University Lecturer in the Department of Radiology

University Lecturer at Consultant level in the Department of Radiology to take up appointment from 1 April 2003. The successful applicant, who will be recommended for an honorary consultant contract with the Addenbrooke's NHS Trust, will be required to undertake teaching, research, and clinical work. The appointment will be for five years, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age, subject to satisfactory performance.

The successful candidate will be eligible to receive an additional payment for clinical responsibility related to the amount of NHS work undertaken. If, as expected, the Lecturer undertakes the equivalent of six or more NHS sessions a week of clinical work the payment will be such as to bring his or her total pensionable emoluments into line with a point on the NHS salary scale for consultants (£52,640 - £68,505).

Senior Technical Officer in the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy

The Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy has a world-class suite of fifteen electron microscopes, both transmission and scanning, and four electron microscope technicians. Applications are invited for a Senior Technical Officer who will ensure that the microscopes operate at peak performance and who will be responsible for training users, both from within the University and from outside, and interacting with microscope manufacturers. The post-holder will have a detailed knowledge of electron optics, vacuum systems, etc., a background in physical science, and will be an expert user of electron microscopes and their analytical attachments.

It is not essential, but it would be an advantage, if the person appointed could also give graduate lectures in electron microscopy, be knowledgeable about image simulation software and computing, develop new electron microscope techniques, and engage in research. However, the post is essentially a very high-level research support position.

Initial appointment will be for a period of five years, which may be renewed until retirement subject to satisfactory performance. The salary will be in the range of £22,522 to £32,537 a year. Departmental Secretary in the Department of Pathology

Applications are invited for the post of Departmental Secretary to Academic Services in this large Department. The successful candiate will be expected to show leadership in the management of departmental resources for research and teaching. This will involve working closely with the Head of Department and other senior staff to develop and implement strategies that sustain and enhance the Department's high academic profile.

The post-holder will inform, facilitate, and manage to completion the Department's response to initiatives which arise within the University, or from the Research Councils, major charities, or various Government institutions. Hence the post-holder will play a pivotal role, relating both to senior academic staff, senior University administrators, and the administrative staff of grant-giving bodies, and also to the Department's teaching officers, contract research staff, assistant staff, and graduate students.

Experience of administration and excellent interpersonal skills are essential. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will have a background in laboratory science to graduate or postdoctoral level. The post is available immediately. Salary will be in the range of £22,522 to £34,734 a year.

Part-time Administrative Officer in the Faculty of Economics and Politics

Applications are invited for a part-time post of Administrative Officer in the Faculty of Economics and Politics to co-ordinate the Graduate Programme. This is an academic-related post within the Academic Division of the University Offices. The post-holder, who will report to the Chairman of the Faculty's Degree Committee, will have day-to-day responsibility for administering Degree Committee business and for managing the Faculty's graduate programme. Duties will include the direction and supervision of graduate office support staff. The successful candidate will be required to service a number of committees and will need to develop a detailed knowledge of University regulations and procedures relating to Degree Committees, including those relating to Ph.D., M.Phil., and Diploma examinations.

The successful candidate will have management expertise, well-developed organizational skills, experience of leading a small team, and the ability to relate well to staff and students. Good communication skills, including report writing are required.

Candidates should be educated to degree level. Previous relevant experience in a senior administrative post is essential, preferably in a higher education establishment. The post is part-time (fifty per cent of full-time) and the salary will be in the range of £20,470 to £26,491 a year pro rata. Hours of work will be by arrangement. The appointment will be for three years in the first instance, with eligibility for reappointment.

Lecturer in the new BP Institute

Lecturer in the new BP Institute to take up appointment in 2002. Applicants should have an interest in one or more of the very wide range of disciplines in multiphase flow: fundamental fluid mechanics (mathematical, numerical, and experimental modelling); thermodynamics and chemical reactions involving flow; flows in process equipment and porous media; multiphase flows involving entrainment and separation of phases; colloids and interfacial phenomena. There will also be opportunities for establishing close links with appropriate research groups in BP. The salary will be in the range of £22,522 to £34,734 a year.
