LEVERHULME EMERITUS FELLOWSHIPS (REF. F6)

The Leverhulme Trust invites applications from recently retired scholars to complete and prepare for publication the results of research already begun. Applicants should have retired during the last three years or must have retired by the time of commencing the Fellowship. Applications will be considered in all subject areas. Approximately thirty Fellowships are offered annually. The closing date for applications is 4 p.m. on 11 February 2003. Applications must be sent to the Research Grants and Contracts Section of the University for approval, together with a completed RSD-1A form before they are sent to the Leverhulme Trust. Application details not available after 4 February 2003. The RSD-1A form can be obtained from the Research Grants and Contracts Section's website (http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/offices/rg-cs/). Please note that the Research Grants and Contracts Section requires three working days to process grant applications.

STUDY ABROAD STUDENTSHIPS (REF. SAS2)

The Leverhulme Trust invites applications from holders of a first degree from a UK higher education institution (or equivalent) for Study Abroad Studentships, tenable for twelve or twenty-four months at any centre of learning in the world, except the UK and USA. Applications will be considered in all subject areas but the awards are not intended for those who wish only to improve their knowledge of modern languages. Approximately twenty Studentships are offered annually. The closing date for applications is 4 p.m. on 9 January 2003. Application details not available after 2 January 2003.

EARLY CAREER FELLOWSHIPS

(Formally called Special Research Fellowships) aim to provide opportunities for those with a proven record of research who do not hold or have not held a full-time established academic post in a UK university or comparable institution. Fellows are expected to undertake a significant piece of publishable research during tenure of the award. Awards are made to the host institution on behalf of the successful applicant, rather than directly to the applicant, and the scheme is based on a pound-for-pound system: the Trust pays half of the Fellow's total salary costs and the host institution pays the other half. Up to twenty Fellowships are offered annually.

Eligible applicants must either hold a first degree from a UK higher education institution or be able to show evidence of equivalent education in the UK or be or have recently been a member of the UK academic community and intend to remain so. Applicants will normally be under age 35 at the time of taking up the award and hold a doctorate or have equivalent research experience. Applications from those over 35 will be considered if a strong and appropriate case can be made. The awards are not available to those who at the time of starting the appointment are registered for or are intending to register for, reading or waiting to have work examined for degrees or equivalent awards, including higher degrees, doctorates, professional or vocational qualifications. Fellowships can be held in universities or other higher education institutions in the UK.

Applicants must secure agreement from their host institution to meet the funding requirements before applying. All fields are eligible and fellowships may last 24 months. Fellowships to be taken up between the beginning of the 2003-04 academic year and 1 May 2004. The Trust will contribute 50% of each Fellow's total salary costs up to a maximum of £17,500 a year, the other 50% to be paid by the host institution. Fellows are to be paid on the national salary scale for academic staff based on age and experience. Each Fellow may seek research expenses up to £1,500 a year (excluding capital items and books).

Application materials will be available after 1 January 2003. Closing date for applications is 4 p.m. on 13 March 2003.

PHILIP LEVERHULME PRIZES

Philip Leverhulme Prizes are for outstanding scholars of substantial distinction and promise, normally aged under 36. Awards will be made in recognition of the research achievement and standing of nominees. Approximately 25 prizes are available across selected disciplines.

For the 2003 competition the disciplines are astronomy and astrophysics; classics; engineering; geography; philosophy and ethics.

The sum of £50,000 is available over two years and prizes can be used for any purpose to advance the prize-holder's research, with the exception of enhancement of the prize-holder's salary; capital items and equipment; or institutional overheads.

Nominees should be under age 36 on 15 May 2003 (although account may be taken of those who began their academic career late or have had career changes or breaks) and they should hold a post in a UK institution of higher education.

Application materials will be available from 1 January 2003 until 8 May 2003. Nominations for Prizes must be made by the head of the nominee's institution (normally a university) and must reach the Trust by 4 p.m. on 15 May 2003. Decisions will be made by the end of November 2003, and Prizes may be taken up at any time before the end of November 2004.

Further details and application forms for these, and other Leverhulme Trust schemes, are available from the Secretary, Research Awards Advisory Committee, Leverhulme Trust, 1 Pemberton Row, London, EC4A 3BG, or from the Trust's website (http://www.leverhulme.org.uk).
